AOoh I love those minion cakes. I've been desperate to make a minion cake for ages so after buying the hemisphere tin for this birdcage I was like Ooh I can make a minion now too haha. My favourite cake I've seen is this one:

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=V-7CT5IzJz0&feature=youtu.be

Let me know if that link works (I think I've figured it out!)

I must say I love this hemisphere tin I'm going to get all of the others. After my failed attempts at liking the tin I just greased it well the second time. It took quite a bit of jiggling to get the cake out but I got there eventually. I don't think the tins are that badly priced too but I don't understand why they go up by a couple £s for every 2inches and then 8inch jumps to £11.99 (6inch is only £6.99 I think) it seems a bit jump for the biggest tin.

ATiddy I've read a few bad things about the Lakeland magic icing - like it nor drying out enough to remove from. The mould etc. Which is why I didn't pick any up when I got the lace mat from Lakeland the other day. But I haven't tried it so can't speak from experience.

I like the nautical idea Tiddy. I have also been looking at the Lakeland magic icing just thought I would go for the Claire Bowman one as Mel had such great results I would be interested to know if the magic icing is just as good.

I am trying really hard not to spend at the minute which is killing me but I have so much cake stuff i have bought and not used yet. It won't last long:lol:

AThanks nanny I've never used a cake release I always just use marg or trex but if it's good I might have to get some. Or try the homemade one someone put on here a few days ago (can't remember who it was).

Roxy I love how detailed they make that cake and the little fondant covered cocktail sticks for hair haha

It was petitecat who gave the recipe for homemade cake release

Mix well by hand or blender- doesn't matter so long as it's all blended well. You can change the amounts depending on how much you need. I make a quarter at a time and that's good for a lot of cake baking :). I refrigerate what I don't use.

For anyone interested in making sugar flowers - Alan Dunn is doing a class on Craftsy covering Bauhinia, Hibiscus and Gardenia. Currently on offer for £19.

Brilliant cakes ladies - hope you are also posting them in your photos with tags so they come up in gallery searches.

Maisie - where are you? We are worried about you.

A cakey get together sounds fab!

Crikey I can't keep up again !! Love all the minions, they are a real craze atm !!

Mel sorry to sound dumb but just to clarify, the top cake of mine (6 inch square) sat on the cake card same size which will leave me the card/paper bit underneath so you can just royal icing or buttercream the bottom cake (which is yes covered in fondant) and the icing will stick to the card bit ok ?

Haha Tiddy think we are all as bad as each other, the only problem is where to put it all cause there is always something else we need!

Jo I do my tiered cakes like you described, I only mentioned putting parchment under for inside a cake as Sugarluva  was worried about the board absorbing moisture from the cake and going soggy.

Jo, yes that's right :) I'd use royal rather than buttercream to stick them together though, once set royal wont budge but butter cream might :)

Unfortunately it does mean the top of the bottom tier will get a bit ripped up when they are separated, but it cant be helped sadly. I normally run a sharp knife between the board and cake to split them apart, and then lift the top tier off for serving. Good luck, you'll be fine! :)

I saw that class advertised today too Catsmum, very tempted as thats somewhat cheaper than his class in Thame in August! :D

I've just remembered I did my first 2 tier cake for my daughter's birthday last year I didn't know you had to put a cake board under each tier so just stacked them on top of each other.I was pleased with how it turned out as I had only been cake decorating for a few months at the time. You can imagine the mess when it came to cutting the cake though

Here's a pic

AThat's lovely roxy. I didn't know you had to put a board under each tier until I started researching how to stack cakes. It's amazing really because it seems so obvious once you know haha.
