Bus Cake - 80Th Birthday In 3-D
24" four-layer bus cake with golden yellow buttercream, fondant and royal icing accessories. This cake was for an 80th birthday for a family friend who used to be a school bus mechanic, skiier, amateur miner of gems and Amsoil dealer. I figured, why make just a cake when i can incorporate all the interests in his long life in an entire scene, so... mountains with powdered sugar "snow", skiis and poles on top of the bus rack, mountains with gems and pickaxe (hard to see here but my Jolly Ranchers candy "gems" melted on the piping gel glue I used, oh well) and an oil drum with the Amsoil logo on the lid and chocolate syrup "oil" running over the sides. But I'm most proud of the asphalt which is grey fondant with black sugar pressed into the surface. The cake was a huge hit at the party and even tasted good! I used vanilla instant pudding in the cake mix to make it easier to carve. 24 inches held up quite well in transport accross town even though my nerves were a wreck with every bump! Hope you like it! - Kahlilacakes
