There are styrofoam wedges covered in fondant between the layers. Then wooden dowels for support in bottom and middle tiers and one long dowel down the center. The wedges need to be smaller that your tiers.

Looks like it was a lot of fun, not to mention a lot of work! Love your colour combo and the little coloured balls really tie it all together.
Oh my gosh, this is so cute! I like the whimsy cakes done this way more so than the tiers that are cut on an angle, looks so much more realistic.
