I was asked the other day to make a candy bar cake for someone who LOVES chocolate. The idea the girl had was to maybe do a sheet cake with a bunch of candy bars or wrappers piped onto the cake. So, in an effort to not let a 1/4 sheet cake become upwards of $100 or so due to all of that intricate piping, I am trying to come up with some ideas to present her with. So far I have thought of making a heart shaped cake with tall chocolate sides (I will have to check with some of you who have done cakes where you cover the sides with a sheet of chocolate) so that there is a lip coming above the top of the cake and filling it with cake balls to look like a box of chocolate. OR making a sheet cake that looks like a bar of Ghirardelli chocolate (or another). OR a cake that is covered with chocolate bars - I am including the pictures that I found online of those.

So what do you all think? Any more good ideas?

what's the recipient's fav. candy bar?

cake wrapped in fondant pulled back to look like bar has been opened and bite taken out.

paint fondant (or edible image) to look like wrapper of fav. bar.

Well, I don't know what her favorite candy bar is - not enough info at this point. All I know is she LOVES chocolate and doesn't seem too particular about the kind. I don't think they want fondant - I remember her telling me on another occasion that she had tasted a fondant cake and HATED it.

well, could use fondant or gumpaste just for the parts of wrapper the stick up away from cake to look like ripped paper and the rest in BC.

I tell ya, the one with the kit kats and the peant butter cups on top looks very yummy - boy am I hungry! icon_lol.gif I like the idea of using candy on the sides and on top, rather than something that looks like a candy bar. Just my personal preference. I think a square cake with kit kats, or other bar types around it would be neat. And then, you could crush up something to go on top - like cookies maybe, or a different type of candy. Making sure that the icing you use isn't overly sweet, since you'll have all the candy. I think the bars would stand really nice on the sides pushing them right in to the icing. Keep us posted - I'd love to see what you come up with!

Hmmmm, I really like the idea of the wrapper in fondant, doug, that could be really cute. But I have next to NO experience with fondant and absolutely no experience with gumpaste. I would be afraid I couldn't pull that off and have it look believable.

If I do a chocolate frosting with the candy bars I would use the Chocolate Syrup Frosting - that stuff is the BEST! It is not really a SWEET frosting, but it is pretty rich, kind of like eating fudge.

I like the idea of the candy bar with a wrapper pulled back and a bite taken out. But that might be hard to do without fondant. My mom is the world's biggest chocoholic so I made her a giant Hershey's kiss for her birthday a couple weeks ago using mostly buttercream. The only fondant is the flag. Super easy and she loved it. Here is the pic. There is a bigger version in my photos as well:

Wow, indigojods! That looks so REAL! I thought it was a hershey kiss when I first looked at it and then I read what you wrote. It really doesn't LOOK easy!

Thanks Kerri! It really was easy. No fancy piping or anything. Just combined a couple different sized cakes and carved a bit and iced.

sjlarby and peacockplace, those are incredible. I was having a hard time picturing exactly what Doug was picturing, but I think these are what HE had in mind. Those are GREAT! Would you mind telling me how you did those - they are PERFECT! They truly look like REAL candy bars with REAL wrappers! WOW! Now I am getting excited about this cake! I can't wait to present these options to her!

That was not my cake. I do not want to take credit for work that was not mine, but i am going to make mine next week look just like it.

i am going to use an 8"x8" square and cut it in half so i end up with a 4x8" candy bar. i am going to use modeling chocolate on the whole thing because it is my new favorite thing to work with and super easy to use. i will cover the chocolate part first covering about a third of the cake making indentions in it to look like pieces, and then cover the rest in the purple. I would absolutely think that you could use fondant to cover the cake, which ever you prefer to work with. I will paint the top edge of the purple in silver luster dust to give it the foil look, and then to finish it I am going to use an edible image (i just scanned in a real dairy milk bar) and place it on top. EASY!

I really like the Kit Kat cake. I wonder how much cake there was compared to the candy. It certainly looks like a lot of Reese's mini cups on top.

I made one. Look in my photos. It did take A LOT of candy, but I think it was worth it. The customer that bought it was really pleased!

sjlarby, I am AMAZED that that is a cake and not a really BIG candy bar! You did an AMAZING job! And camouflagegirl, your cake looks EXACTLY like the one I posted at the beginning of this topic! Well, except for the ribbon idea, which I really like! You did a great job, too!

I can't start on the cake for another couple of weeks, still haven't been able to get in touch with the lady who ordered it. Should be interesting to see what she chooses.
