My niece is celebrating her 16th b'day next month at a Japanese restaurant and loves anything with a Japanese theme.
I have tried "googling" ideas for decorating a cake, but am not having much luck. I did see the adorable "Japan Inspired Cookies" from Cake Central's antonia74, and may use some of those ideas.
Has anyone ever decorated a cake with a Japanese theme? I would love to hear your ideas.

I never did a cake in that theme...but I once had to paint 4 large paintings for a Japanese restaurant. I did 2 "cranes" paintings and 2 fish paintings. Koi and others......
I always get great ideas from searching the "images"...Google is a good one. Just type in Japanese art or something simila and you will get an abundance of photos. How about a geisha made out of fondant? Or just some cute Japanese slippers?....

here is a link to a cake that was done for a wedding. I would find symbols that you think would be good for a birthday a you can put them on the cake.
You can do a two tier like the below but just show one or two symbols for ther birthday. Hope that makes sense The symbols on the this cake mean "double happiness"

This would be good to look and help you write something in Japanese

maybe a 3D take out box...... maybe a fortune cookies carved from a sheet cake.....
i think that the gallery had some good ideas for an asian styles cake....
Im with adven68 anytime I have to do a cake I google and see if an image or idea can get the juices flowing..........
that usually helps

Thanks for all of the ideas guys!
The cakes posted by antonia74 are absolutely stunning! I am definitely not at that point of "mastery". They are truly works of art.
I found symbols for "happiness" which I will put around the sides of the cake, and she also likes japanese cartoon characters. So, I will stick to basics for now. Thanks again!
