I keep reading about how easy it is to smooth oddly shaped cakes using the viva paper towel method. I’ve tried a few times now and all it does is crack the crusted buttercream. Looks worse than before. If anyone has actually used this method, any tips?

you need to start smoothing at the right time well before it fully crusts -- usually something like five or ten minutes after applying -- just gotta get a feel for it -- it needs to slightly crust, just dry off enough so the towel doesn't stick -- you'll like this method when you get it down --

you might need to juggle your icing recipe a bit but probably not --

I'm with -K8 when she says that you may need to juggle your icing. Every time I tried the method with a recipe containing less than 50% shortening as fat matter, the method was really hard to apply if not a total failure! When making your buttercream, be sure to use at least 50% shortening. I recommend the other 50% to be butter. And double the amount of the total fat in powdered sugar. Adjust consistency with milk, cream, dairy free stuff, etc.
