Customer wants a rose gold and black  buttercream graduation cake. I have only heard of petal/luster  dust in rose gold. Has anyone done  this before ?This would be for a 18x26 sheet cake. Thanks in advance.

How much of the cake do they want to be black vs rose gold? Could you pipe a border or accents with white buttercream and then paint them with rose gold luster dust mixed with vodka? I also see a rose gold airbrush color sold by Decopac on Amazon. I have used airbrush color to dye frosting in a pinch when I didn't have the gel color I needed. It might be worthwhile to try mixing the airbrush color with a small amount of buttercream to see if that will make a suitable color?

I with spray the cake with a medium pink, let it dry, then overspray with a metalic gold.

i would talk my clients into using brown instead of black if they could not do black chocolate -- there's a black cocoa powder, the oreo cookie cocoa powder and it tastes great -- you still might need a little black food color but not much -- however, black icing will not only run the risk of tasting wonky it stays in the teeth at the celebration -- awkward -- you could airbrush or spray it black and that would alleviate a lot of the issue too -- but i would recommend avoiding solid black food colored icing --

best to you

You could make ganache with black candy melts for the black portion.  Black chocolate is not as bad about staining everything as buttercream.  Still messy.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Ok, so after many discussions with client I ended up icing the cake light pink. Writing was in black and  with #4  black garland on sides. Scroll work on top was white painted gold with edible gold sheet flakes on top of cake. Borders in white and  had large pink and white roses with gold tips. Black ribbon around sides of cake boards.  Mother was extremely happy and I'm glad it's done. That is going to be my last full sheet until I get a new hip this fall. It's just to heavy for me to handle right now.
