Wilton Gel Colors Storage Issues
Decorating By chrisbakes77 Updated 5 Mar 2020 , 7:15pm by SandraSmiley

Since I started decorating cakes I've used the Wilton's Gel Food Colors that come in the little plastic jars. I noticed after I opened them and using them and stored them in my caddy box (with the draw containers with the tip storage on both sides) they would explode. Gel expanded and leaked through cap and ran down the jar to the surface, thus gets all over everything. Many times I had to insanely flush water and clean the entire caddy. I tried storing them in my kitchen cabinet and it did the same thing.
I've come to the conclusion that if they encased in something where extreme heat is they explode. Last year, I just used a tuperware container without putting the lid on left them on my counter and so far nothing has leaked. But I have to store them somewhere and don't want them on the counter due to lack of space, because I don't decorate cakes all the time, and a place that it's not enclosed; can't put the container in the closet or cabinet they will explode and then they get on brand new unopened colors. Has anybody experienced the exploding leaking issue and if you have, do you have a suggests alternative to what I'm currently doing in order to store them? Thanks

I've never had that problem either and I keep mine in a plastic storage box all the time. Our house is airconditioned, so they never get over approximately 75 degrees.

I too have never had this problem. I have stored my Wilton colour gels in my Wilton caddy for years. Never a issue. What temperature is your house, storage area. Do you live in a hot and humid climate?? I too have AC, so my house is always around 75-77 degrees. But I couple of times, my AC died, and my house got up and over 84 degrees. AC wasn’t fixed for 4 or 5 days. Still, no issues. I’m wondering, do you tighten the caps too hard on the container? That’s all I can think of. No room to expand.

Never had any pronlem with my wilton gel colors. Just a thought... when you use the gel color, are you making sure to use a fresh clean toothpick for each dip in the jar? The only explanition I can think of, would be If the jar is somehow contaminated with buttercream or something...
