If your work under the Cottage Food Law, and a potential or booked client asks to see your kitchen - what do you say?

Anyone encountered that request from a client?

How do you handle clients that are "iffy" about you working from home?

If they’re “iffy” at all I would just have a recommended list of bakeries they can contact for their cakes.

Feeling tentative about buying from home bakeries can lead to a lot of drama that you should avoid. If there are any problems with the cake (real or perceived) they may use the home bakery info against you.

ive never had anyone ever ask to see my kitchen - they have seen and tasted my work and note how I conduct business over the phone or in person and are assured by the professionalism.

If someone questioned that and asked to see pics of my kitchen I would be very wary.

That being said, I knew a woman who had a cupcake business and every morning when she dropped her son off at my school trash would literally  fall out of her car and there was dog hair all over her. I clearly never ate a cupcake she gave me, even though, who knows...maybe her actual kitchen was spotless?!?!

Working from home can be VERY dangerous.  There was a post recently (1-2 months) of a gal with a legal home bakery who was visoushly beaten & raped when a man asked for a consultation to order!   Yes, Iworked out of my home - back some 30-40 yrs ago - Way before cottage food laws - never ever thought of something bad like that happening but...........things are different these days I guess.    if you do let someone come over just to see your kitchen I would be sure to have others around (especially hubby/a man) !     When I had to close my bakery I had some 1/2 dozen orders on the books; I call each one & told them I'd do their cake (mostly weddings) but would be working out of my home.  All were ok with that .......none ? my kitchen/home cleanlieness .........but one could'nt get over the thought that I might forget! & cancelled  :)

I work from home, have for over 40 years but I don't advertise and I don't get many people coming to my house that don't know me. My advertisement has all been "word of mouth" from other satisfied customers. When people call that haven't met me usually say "my name was given to them by so & so". I get a lot of referrals like that and I have NEVER had any of them ask to see my kitchen.

Kakeladi's right it is a more dangerous world today and you really have to be careful.

I will gladly send them pictures of my kitchen, but no one can pick up any order or "tour" my kitchen unless my husband is home. My comfort comes first, so if something doesn't sit right with me; the answer is just no.

I appreciate all the input.  I meet clients outside of my home.  On rare occasion I had clients pick up a cake and never had a single issue.

But I have never had anyone walk in to my kitchen and look around.  It makes me uncomfortable, not because it's not clean (of course it is!), it just doesn't feel right.

WHat about licenses?  I forward license and/or proof of insurance to venues upon request.  But I have one client asking for a hard copy.  Never before has that been asked of me.  Have any of you?

tell them they can print it off — I mean is it a big venue or something? or someone just getting in your business
