Marbled Buttercream Technique?

Hi everyone. I literally HATE fondant. I hate everything about it—SO I’m always looking for a buttercream finesse. I like really modern looking cakes and have been seeing marbled buttercream on the rise. Photo on the left is the main type of marbled buttercream that I see (and already know how to achieve). Do any of you know what the marbling technique for the photo on the right is? The photo on the right is what I consider to be a TRUE marbled design and best replicates the actual stone! Thanks so much.

I would bet my boots that the bottom cake is fondant.

I agree! That bottom cake definitely looks like fondant. The top is simply watercolor buttercream. Super simple. I'm sure you could make a design very similar to the fondant cake pictured, just have to take your time and place your grey/black in various spots to achieve the look your going for.

idk if it's fondant or not but you could definitely get that look by piping the different strengths of grey and mottling them around a bit with a spatula then flattening them with a smoothy smooth cloth that's been all folded up -- some people like to use viva paper towels but we used brand new super clean cloths -- old fashioned brand new cloth diapers work great and there are kitchen towels you can get that are light in weight and smooth
