I'm making a paint themed cake ..the buyer wants paint splater and paint running down the sides .Can I use melted buttercream frosting on top of the buttercream iced cake? I've never used ganache and I have done this before once but I poured the icing on an uniced cake. Will it make my buttercream shift underneath? Plz help

Melted buttercream would leave you with sugar suspended in melted butter. It wouldn't look or taste the way you want it to. I would recommend a poured frosting (https://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/poured-fondant-icing-recipe) or a candy melt/ white chocolate drip (https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-create-a-drippy-cake-frosting-249945). It will need to cool to the correct temp before pouring, so the frosting underneath should be fine. Make sure to use a crusting butter cream on the top as that will help it to be unaffected.

you could do a glaze made with milk, confectioner's sugar and food color but i can see that needing to be finessed -- you could add some soft butter too for a little more body --
or add liquid to your buttercream to just loosen it up -- but try it first on a cake pan or something to see if you can the look you want -- but not melted

Like the cake in the post above? I used royal icing on buttercream.
