I'm going to try the trick of putting a gel color stripe up the side of a piping bag. If I use an 18 in bag and go abt 2/3 of the way up, about how many cupcake Roses do you think I'll get before the gel runs out?

One bag. Next bag, run a stripe up the opposite side and you will get one bright line, and one faint line. Or, just run another gel line up the side you already used.

@K8memphis I have some 15 inch bags too, I just like the bigger bags, less refills.  What is the advantage to parchment bags?  I haven't tried them before, so just wondering.

they are just my go to -- no washing -- I love less refills but I could not make a rose with one as big as yours -- squeezing an 18 inch bag -- that ultimately will be 8 or 9 inches long once filled -- and twirling a rose nail with accuracy makes my wrists hurt -- that's a ton of strength to push  through that giant mass of icing -- an 18 is gonna be maybe five inches around at the top of the icing -- so you're pushing through, moving a lot of icing to get that teeny tiny petal out -- no reason to use that much strength -- work smarter not harder -- right -- filling more bags is easy compared to the amount of strength you will expend until you work out about half of the icing --

now if your icing is super whippy and light -- an 18 might be cool -- but not me using American bc --

and a lot of times you take a huge bag like that and twist it off down closer to the tip -- so it's twisted off twice -- and when that's piped out -- then release that lower twist -- and push more icing down from the back of the bag -- but that would mess up the stripe some --

idk --

and just for the record -- one of my favorite things is to fill a small red, brown, grass green, orange and a large gold color bag -- then take an empty bag and drop a leaf tube or cut it to make a leaf (parchment) and pipe a line up the sides of all the colors then fill the bag with the gold -- makes the most beautiful fall changing leaves --

so you can use colored icing to pipe the stripe in the bag too -- like follow the seam --

anyway --

Thanks for all of the tips!  No pun intended :)  Your leaf idea just gave me a good idea for Christmas time.  Yay.. Thanks!

I can[t use such large bags either :)  I mostly used 10"er - either parchment or Wilton cloth(?) - can't think - they are a sort of plastic but don't dry hard like plastics do (I've had a few of those - UUGGG!) .

K8 - I used to teach a class on how to make up fall colors in b'cream can't remember - I think the instructions are on this site somewhere. Make up a batch of b'cream (using 2# of sugar) and color it one color (yellow?), remove 1/4 of it, add another color (red?) to that; remove 1/3 adding another color to that, and romove 1/2 adding another color. Or maybe it was reversed - removing 1/2, then 1/3, then 1/4?   Oohhh how I wish I could remember such things!  When I don't use a thought I forget :(    Yet, there are some things I remember - like making a rose, and other flowers; riding a bike etc, etc.  Don't you hate getting old? :(

lynne -- yes in a way but I try to stay positive -- but it is a challenge -- although I just stepped out of a hot Epsom salt bath so I actually feel pretty ok right now -- and I'm in the process of having my hair analyzed for  whatever things my body may be deficient in -- and she will write me up a plan and help me with all that -- I stopped most all of my arthritis meds - they don't work -- so i'm trying something new --

and try meditation -- it really helps the brain -- you can sign up for free -- https://www.headspace.com/

even just the deep breathing and the free ten minute thing Really helps -- that's really all one needs try it :) if you can --

but you are right -- it is quite challenging

and our basic colors were made for us -- so all I had to do was walk over and fill my bags -- we had to mix anything that wasn't there but -- yeah I love to do cakes & stuff -- just think if this new thing works maybe I can do a little something -- hope hope hope
