Hi

I am making a Beauty and the Beast enchanted rose cake that will be two tiers tall, with a rose (bought from the shop) on the top.  A bit like in this picture.  The rose has just arrived and doesn't feel too heavy but looks quite tall.  I am interested in people's opinions as to whether they would try to stick the rose jar down somehow (the bottom is wood) or just balance it on top and hope it doesn't fall off

I will probably carry it separately to the venue but the person I am making it for (a friend as I am just an amateur!) would like to carry the cake to put in front of the birthday girl whilst everyone is singing happy birthday.  I think the cake is going to be quite heavy anyway as it is an 11 inch and a 7 inch cake and don't want it to collapse or fall off!!

Your client probably has no idea how heavy the cake will be.  Perhaps you should suggest the birthday girl close her eyes, or even be blindfolded, and positioned in front of the cake while they sing happy birthday.  Once in position, she could open her eyes or have the blindfold removed.  That way, you could just set the rose on top with no fear of it falling.  It does need a small cakeboard or parchment paper circle between the wooden base and the cake.

That's one stunning cake.  I did one like it myself. ; )  When I made mine, I didn't place the rose on top until my friend picked it up to take home.  I "glued" the base (my dome was all plastic) down with candy melts and it stuck to the fondant.  But in this case, I agree with everything Sandra said.  The wee one would never know what you did and would still be happy!

Sandra's suggetion is o.k.  Personally I think I'd 'glue' that  rose/top down w/a generous dab of b'cream or melted choco as cupcake goddess said.  Be sure to use 3 supports/dowels in the form of a triangle.

Agree with everyone. Use supports in under the rose/wooden base. Make sure there is a round cake board for support as well.  100% suggest they blind fold the kid instead of carrying the cake!

Thanks for your replies everyone.  I have spoken to my friend and I think we are going to carry the cake over (having taken the rose off) and then place it back on and then sing happy birthday - rather than singing as the cake is being carried over.  The issue was not so much surprising the child as the fact that there isn't a lot of space for everyone to gather around a 'cake table'.  Hopefully it will all work out - now just need to make it!
