So I have been asked to do a kid's baking class and I am trying to come up with ideas. They will be 10-14 years old and the class size will be 10 to 15 max, and it will be 1 1/2 - 2 hrs.. I believe I will also have another adult helping me as well. I'm trying to think of things that will make them feel accomplished and give them items to take home, but will be safe and age appropriate. So far the only thing I've though of is no-bake cookies. I could have oats/coconut premeasured in bowls for them, and make a batch of the hot stuff on the stove (butter, sugar, etc) and then pour it into their bowls and they can mix and then scoop the cookies, It is also going to be in October so maybe some sort of Halloween sugar cookie they could decorate? Or the witch hat/broomstick cookies made with hershey's kisses, pretzel sticks etc. I'm kinda stuck, and would love some help. The class will be done in a fully stocked professional kitchen/class event space, so I have a lot of room and equipment. Thanks!

I don't know, I have kids in that age group, and the things you are suggesting, sound a little juvenile, more for the under 10 crowd. How about teaching them to pipe buttercream on cupcakes and how to cut out fondant shapes/or use a mold for décor on the cupcakes. Maybe make royal icing in different colors in piping bags and they can decorate Halloween cookies. I think they will have more sense of accomplishment in taking their original work home, where they have creativity in it.

This is an opportunity to teach basics to that age group. I have taught brownie basics ( can cut into shapes with cookie cutter after they cool and iced) add some royal icing eyeballs etc. Baking was my bribery for students when I was a grade school teacher. Making chocolate chip cookies ( creaming techniques), icebox cookies in seasonal colours and flavours is great.
Simple loaf cakes, apple crumble, and pound cakes usually always work out. Maybe they can make mini loaves of these to take home . I stressed safety rules before we started. See if you can have paper copies of recipes and rules/info so they can go home and practice.
Good luck

sorry this posted twice..have no idea why and I cant seem to figure out how to remove extra posting.

Can't seem to get a link from my album to post here :( On pg 13 I have some pumpkins w/a haystack.....mini doll skirt cakes and ice cream cone; Also on pg 15 there are some cookie turkeys. Then on pg 14 are some fondant figures. All of those ideas could be put together. There are many different but similar ways to make those turkey cookies. Just search this site or google it.

Those kids are old enough to make (and enjoy) a batch of chocolate chip cookies. If you have another adult, break the group into two separate teams and have a contest. They will learn basic baking skills and math, and they'll always remember how much fun it was to make their own chocolate chip cookies!

if you pipe anything, royal icing cleans up infinitely easier than buttercream :)
