I love the gorgeous cake spheres that Cotton & Crumbs bakery makes!! I really want to make them for my market but wondering if anyone knows how they are made?

I think they might be made like super-sized cake pops but not sure. It looks like they're dipped in chocolate coating which would definitely be easier than fondant.

i would bake the cakes in a half sphere pan -- wilton has one but it seems bigger than these -- combine the halves with butterceam, crumb coat and trim -- then i would use a powdered sugar glaze -- milk, lemon juice, vanilla and powdered sugar -- but i would fashion a stand to hold the cakes firmly in place so they don't roll when i poured the glaze --

the tray would be made of foam so i could stick a bamboo skewer into the cake and affix it into the foam tray through the rack -- i'd cover the tray with parchment so i could recycle the icing -- probably do two coats of the glaze -- and you'd need to be ready to move them before they set up to keep the bottom pretty -- tons of icky picky work -- but they are so beautiful -- there's a good reason there's only five in the photo

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't even think about keeping the cakes in place - forgot that balls roll haha! I think a glaze is the way to go. I just would love to know how she makes the round shape because it looks perfect. I haven't seen any cake pans for this size. May have to give it a try on my own and see what happens.

See how putting the 1/2s together would be just about the right size?   If you roll the fondant much bigger than you need it covers a sphere shape w/o pleating etc

Thanks so much, kakeladi! I will definitely look for those Wilton mini 1/2 ball pans.

I bought some silicone "pinch bowls"

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Norpro-Mini-Silicone-Pinch-Bowls-4-Piece-Set-/322275129240?epid=1100080672&hash=item4b09183798:g:bDQAAOSwoBtW3LHk

Haven't had time to try them yet. But seems like the right size. AND they have a "base" so I can set them on a cookie sheet and bake.

Very interesting idea with those pinch bowls! They do look like the right size.

What I see about using those pinch bowls is a flat spot on both the top and bottom of anything made in them.  And they probably won't be totally round :(

I have the pinch bowls and use them all the time for prep work but haven't used them to bake in.  They are actually round on the bottom.

If you look up Cake Baubles, Mini Cake Baubles, etc. Tons of tutorials and videos.

these are made as mini cakes, covered in fondant with hand piping (then painting over when dry) and some are simply hand painted.

Beautiful and intricate like mini wedding or tea cakes so charge according if selling!

Yes, I found some using "baubles" as the keyword. I would never have thought of that myself. Thanks for the help!!!
