Wilton Cake Pans-Sides Aren't Straight?!
Baking By newbiebaker1 Updated 16 Dec 2016 , 1:12am by gscout73

I was in a pinch today and had to go to Michael's to buy an extra cake pan (Cake is for a party tomorrow so I didn't have time to order online). I bought a "Celebrate it" Wilton pan. It has been a long time since I have bought a Wilton pan, but when I got this one home, I realized that the sides weren't straight. The bottom of the 9 inch pan is 8.5 inches and the top is 9.5. Whaaaaat? Why would anyone make a pan without straight sides? Has anyone had any problems baking in these pans? I'm debating whether to keep it. It seems like it would just be a pain to try to stack and ice a multilayer cake with straight sides if you aren't even starting out with cakes that have straight sides. Am I missing something? Thanks.

Most pans you see in most stores (7" and 9") have angled sides for the simple reason they stack better. A straight sided pan will usually come in the 6", 8" and 10" sizes. Weird, huh?

You can trim the side edges to be straight after you stack the layers. Not that much of a big deal as you are not changing the base dimmensions. This is what I do as I can't afford expensive pans. I only really have this issue with my large rectangle and book pans. My rounds of the same sides do not nest, nor do my squares, hex, or petals.
