Hello fellow Cake Makers!
I am new to this site and this is my very first post/question
I am making my father an Airplane cake for his 60th birthday at the end of July. I need it to look like the actual plane as much as possible. He fly's a Boeing 737-800 for Canjet. I have planned to make the body of the airplane out of rice crispy treats and cover it in fondant. I then plan to use edible images for the decals etc on the plane.
My question is this - what should i make the wings out of? Also, what should I make the engines out of. A planes engine sits just below the wing, however on my cake, my vision is to have it appear to be "taking off' on a runway. So if you imagine a slab cake with a runway, and then the plane sitting in a PVC cradle to lift it up. That being said, my issue is my plane will not be just lying on top of the cake, which is how I see it done on cakes online.
So, gum paste for the wings maybe?? And what for the engines?? would have to be something light enough so the wings don't fall
Oh please help! haha!

i am sorry this has almost slipped past your deadline without getting answered -- i think they are holding new posters first posts as a gate keeper action designed to resist gridlock spam we've endured in the past --
i love your 'action' vision for the plane taking off --
i would recommend using foam core board for the wings -- no i would not use gum paste no -- if it must be edible you could try gingerbread but if it's quite an expanse, i'd just use foamcoare -- and i think i'd use foam for the engines too -- especially due to the 'take off' positioning'
if you use rkt for the fuselage and you need to smooth it out -- use a microplane --
i know this is a late response for a sculpture --hope all is going well!

AI actually saw a tutorial for a cake like this on LearnCakeDecoratingOnline.com, it's by this great decorator named Handi. His is made from cake.

smckinney, did he build a stand?
i thought of ways to attach cookies or cake to the wings for the engines but it's too hard to explain it and it's almost past time -- i mean depending on the size of the finished product you could just use blumps of fondant or modeling choco too for the engines

AMy thought would be to do the whole plane in Rice Krispy treat using long bamboo skewers for wing support. Dip the engines in chocolate and attach with toothpicks and melted chocolate. Support the plane on two dowel rods and put white cotton candy cloud underneath. Add cotton candy just before serving as it tends to melt from moisture in the air.

Hello everyone!
Thank you soooo much for your replies! I am terribly sorry, but it appears as if my reply to you all didn't post for some reason!!
I wanted to thank you all for your comments and suggestions! Also I thought I would let you know how I made out with the cake!
So I ended up making the body of the plane in rkt, and the wings and engines out of cardboard. I had decided that the plane was going to be basically the topper so it was ok to have some of it in-edible.
I have attached some pictures so you can see how it turned out…let me know what you think!!

oh wow you did it brilliantly -- when i did mine-- my wings were all one big whonking piece from tip to tip -- you were very brave to do it that way -- it rocks the house because you have the wings propped up on the engines! great job -- looks amazing --
i love/adore the way it's in flight with the nose air born -- amazing -- i love a cake in motion-- "looking fast standing still"
insert {clapping hands smile face}

wait wait wait wait wait one more thing -- ok of course there's sky and clouds -- but she's got a rainbow on the board!
you freaking rocked it

is the rainbow because of the flash? because in other pictures the paper looks just a little holographic or sparkley -- then in the second picture -- the money shot -- it's a rainbow -- annointed

Your plane looks fantastic!! You really did a great job and I am sure it was the hit of the party.
