I am making myself a cake with a black background, so last night I did a bit of experimenting with fondant. The first round I used black fondant and airbrushed my scene onto it, turned out pretty well. The second round I used white fondant, airbrushed black and then painted my scene on that. Personally I like the way the white went onto the black fondant better, less coats, but I like the way the airbrushed black scene turned out, more.

I was just curious as to what other people prefer working with - black fondant or airbrushing white fondant black ? Do you notice a big difference in the results?

Thanks for any input! I'm working on it today, so I will let you know what option I ended up going with.

ACommercially made black fondant would probably be my choice if I was going to airbrush white.

I know whenever I've used really dark colors on my airbrush, it never seems to dry all the way. Not that it's tacky, but the color still comes off on your fingers if you touch it. kwim? I would rather use pre-colored dark colors and just hit it with a little airbrush thatn airbrush the whole thing really dark for that reason. But that's just my opinion!

I sort of had to do both. My black gel colour was only making the fondant go dark purple. Maybe with time it would have gotten darker, but I am impatient (its just a cake for me). So I used the fondant, but had to airbrush it a little blacker, which wasn't too bad. It didn't take long to dry. I have my first and second coats of white on now, its getting there :)

I have to say that before I got my airbrush, I didn't even know white food colour existed - it has been fun experimenting with it. It's been fun learning to airbrush in general, and I appreciate your tips on your preferences. Thanks!

When working on Black Fondant, I prefer to airbrush White with Colored Coca Butter.

Cocoa butter is MUCH more opaque than normal airbrush colors.

However, you'll need a higher air sureness of around 25-40psi and a large needle/nozzle size above .35mm or an external mix single action.

I've done real looking flames this way.

Black fondant base.

White cocoa butter base.

Layers of yellow, orange & red colored cocoa butter

.... or, experiment with hand-painting the white and then airbrushing. Some colors will bead up on the cocoa butter.

Interesting. I have been curious about cocoa butter, but have never used it. It's definitely something I will keep in mind. Your flames look perfect! I was making a space cake (because I really liked the picture in a book). I am pretty happy with how it turned out (its my most recent picture in my gallery).

I am REALLY enjoying what it can do already and I am just starting so I am hoping to learn a lot! You tube has been super helpful and I was lent a couple books that I can't put down with cool effects and techniques. In the future I think I will have to get a better airbrush. So far I am still really happy with the one I have but apparently you can get better ones that end up giving you much more control. I'm having a great time playing with it and learning new things though!

Thanks for the great tips, really helpful and appreciated.
