I used to make black forest cake for my birthday every year! I used the recipe from the original Betty Crocker cookbook which consists of a fudgy 2 layer chocolate cake, a cherry filling made from canned tart cherries and corn starch and a little alcohol and sugar, then frosted with whipped cream and covered in shaved chocolate - it was (and still is) delicious! I'm at work now but can give you the recipe over the weekend if interested. My birthday's on Valentine's day so I always made this cake in an 8" heart pan but it translates pretty good to 8-9" round. I've made the chocolate cake recipe so many times x 1.5 and doubled!

AHere's the recipe from Betty Crockers International Cookbook:
2 1/4 cups AP flour 1 2/3 cups sugar 2/3 cup cocoa 1 1/4 ts BS 1 ts salt 1/4 ts BP 1 1/4 cup water 3/4 cup butter 2 eggs 1 ts vanilla
1/2 cup sugar 3 tb corn starch 1can (16 oz) pitted tart cherries ( or if sweet, cut down sugar to 2 tb) drained, reserve liquid 1/4 cup kirsch
Enjoy! RJ

A traditional black forest is chocolate genoise soaked in kirsch and filled with whipped cream and tart cherries. The whole thing is usually iced with whipped cream and then sprinkled with chocolate shavings. If you have to ice it with buttercream you can layer shavings inside the filling.

I just realized about the copyright issues when I posted the recipe (and just saw that the instructions were removed)- I apologize for that! I did want to mention that this cake makes 2 layers, filled with the cherry filling and some sweetened whipped cream, then the top of the cake has more cherry filling spread on it and the entire cake is frosted in sweetened whipped cream and covered with chocolate shavings and curls. If you need more info, feel free to PM me.
Best of luck to you!
