How Do I Make Homemade Metallic Silver Buttercream Frosting

Hi,
I am new to cake decorating and I read some of the suggestions on this site about how to make silver buttercream frosting but I am still confused. I do not have an airbrush. I would like any suggestions you have for me on how to make a metallic silver buttercream frosting without an airbrush. thank you.

I was told by several different decorators and instructors that you can not acheive that color with BC without airbrush. You may be able to purchase the edible silver glazes or spray and paint them. However, I'm not sure what the reaction on BC would be or if it will hold up to the brush strokes. It would take one steady soft hand on a very good crusting BC. Then you may have the problem of the oils not allowing the adhesion of color, so you could very well get a spotty cake. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your response. I read that you can make a clear alcohol and luster dust concoction and lightly brush it onto buttercream that has been colored gray... but i would hate to have a spotty cake. The best thing to do i guess is to by the spray then. thanks.

I do it all the time. Are you planning to do a whole cake in silver? Or just some accents? If you are just doing accents I would just paint with luster dust and alcohol. For a whole cake I would get a spray.

If you do not have an airbrush, I have used luster dust dry, but on a cake that had been frozen, and was "dewy". The sugar makes the dew sticky, and the luster dust sticks very well. I splotched in on, all over, then brushed it with a poofy brush to even it out. You can layer it a few times for coverage. And freeze it several times as well.
