Hi,
I'm new and have been making cakes for about a year now. I want to start making roses but I know you have to have a certain recipe for the icing. Every recipe I have found requires meringue powder. However, I can't get that here where I live and was wondering if there's a substitute? I see that it can be ordered but postage to Greece is quite expensive at times. Any tips would be helpful! Thank you!

You don't need meringue powder to make a buttercream rose... People just use it to help it crust. You can use just butter or shortening and make it stiff and you can make your roses.

Plus, meringue powder is just a substitute for Egg whites!

If it's royal icing you are trying to make your roses with then you can use 3 large egg whites, 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar(or slight pinch of tartaric acid), 4 sifted cups of powdered sugar.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. Your replies have been very helpful! I wasn't sure if I would get any replies since I'm new and I'm not that great at decorating yet, but I was pleasantly surprised! Thanks for your help! icon_biggrin.gif
