Silly Question.... What Do You Call Yourself?
Business By AmysCakesNCandies Updated 21 Feb 2012 , 8:38pm by Staceys-sweets

I don't know why I am struggling with this one.... I am doing a career day at my son's school and I have to put a Tittle for what I do. I have referred to myself as many things in the past:
Pastry Chef
Cake Artists
Baker
Cake Decorator
Wedding Vendor
Small Business Owner
Candy Maker
But no one of theese succinctly describles what I do.
So my question to all of you... When people ask what you do for a living, what is your reply?

I call myself a "Cake Designer"..this describes me well. While I am a good baker, I only do basic recipes, vanilla, chocolate, RV, Carrot..nothing "main stream" or really gourmet and out of the box with my baking. However, I decorate much differently than other bakeries in the area, I don't do sheet cakes, just "designer cakes" HTH!

Amy,
It sounds to me like you are a confectioner, which Webster defines as "a manufacturer of or dealer in confections." I guess technically all of us are, but it is especially appropriate for you since you make a lot of candies as well.

In call myself a Caker! I do almost all cupcakes and cakes. No breads or pastries so I don't think Baker is right for me personally

I am a Professional Baker and Cake Designer. I have 40 years of baking experience with many contests etc behind me and Culinary School took me to the professional level. I never considered myself a Pastry Chef because I just love the nuts and bolts that is baking, since bread baking is a main-stay in my life more than playing with chocolate and sugar showpieces I consider myself a Baker. I now have 20 years of professional baking and cake design experience.
I am also a Textile Artist, and a Potter, I have never come up with one title that covers all.

Baker_Rose brought up the point I was going to make. Chef is usually referred to as someone who has a Culinary degree.
Confectioner refers to someone who does sugar work, but not in the baking capacity.
I call myself the owner. If someone asks what I do, I say I own a bakery. I don't get technical because no one really cares. If I had to describe my trade to children, I'm an artisan baker and confectioner.

I am so glad this topic has come up - I was always wondering whether it is cake designer, cake decorator, cake artist, edible artist...... Personally I like cake designer. But what are do people call themselves who are cupcake makers? Cupcake decorators, artists, designers, makers? Do let me know I would love to know what it is the preferred term!

Chef just means that you are any cook or the chief cook of your kitchen.

I thought I was the only one who called myself a Caker. I'm so glad I'm not alone in this
