So my mom "hired" (buying my supplies) me to make cupcakes for my two brothers' birthdays and her best friend. Since their birthdays are all like a week from each other they are having one big party. My brothers cupcakes are simple enough, chocolate with peanut butter frosting for the youngest (12) and vanilla (tinted blue) with buttercream frosting for the oldest (20). Both with basic swirls.

For her best friend she wants "rainbow" cupcakes. I get how to make the cupcake itself. (Yellow or white batter, split into 5, mix in colors). My question is what icing goes on top? Well, not really what icing. I'm going to use buttercream, but what color? I don't just want white. Is there a way to "mix" icing colors without them blending? So I get a rainbowy type icing too? Or is that too much rainbow?

If you stripe the bag with different colors or load 2+ colors into a larger bag it will come out rainbowy. HTH!

I think what you're looking for is to stripe the icing bag with different colors. I found this link:

I personally think rainbow frosting on rainbow cupcakes would be a bit much. You can frost with white and add sprinkles or, depending on how many u are making frost with different solid colors.

Thank you icon_smile.gif

I bake in silicone pans, I found some that I like & my cupcake liners fit perfectly in them. Only thing is that I have to put them onto a cookie sheet before putting them into the oven (because the silicone is so flexible).

May I ask which silicone pans you use? I love how 'straight up and down' they are!

Me too! Although, just so you're aware, i've had a few people think these are smaller than normal cupcakes because the base looks slighty smaller. Because of this, i've been making a point to bake them so they have more height.

I get mine from Briscoes, they are the red silicone muffin tins. They are $30, but I always go when they have a 50% off saleicon_wink.gif

oh... also may I ask which cupcake liners you use? I have been hunting everywhere for ones that will go straight up, but no luck so far. I was at Milly's yesterday and inspected every pack!

as for the liners.......I get mine from Gilmours, and am trying out some from Starline Distributors this weekend. They aren't "straight" up and down, but I think the tin I use helps with that. I used to use the rainbow coloured pack from Countdown, but it seems like their liners have grown in size lol. They're too big for my tin now!!

Thanks everyone! I made a practice batch today and just used plain vanilla with sprinkles. I'm going to try the coloring as soon as I get some more paste. I ran out! icon_sad.gif lol (The pics are in my photos!)
