A friend of mine requested a vanilla cake and I've heard that both yellow and white cakes are considered vanilla, is that true.

I personally use white cake mix and use vanilla extract for a vanilla cake. I have even threw in a small vanilla pudding box in the recipe. I use the wasc recipe. Or, if you want to do a french vanilla I have subbed some of the water in the recipe for french vanilla creamer and also used vanilla extract for flavoring.

yellow cakes are made with whole eggs, white cakes are made with egg whites and you can add vanilla to either one.

I dont know if either would be considered just vanilla?

I think of any cake where the main flavoring is vanilla extract as a vanilla cake. Is there any way you can ask your friend whether s/he would prefer a yellow or a white cake?

I usually use white cake mix but then use the egg yolks and plenty of vanilla (and vanilla pudding too) which makes it a light yellow cake.
