When making my marshmallow fondant, I have had two instances where when I have bought the Great Value brand of powdered sugar from Walmart, it ended up tasting bad. Even from the moment I poured it in the bowl of marshmallows, I could tell something was different. Instead of a sweet smell, it had a kind of musty smell and when I tasted some it was horrible! Needless to say, i will not be buying THAT kind anymore. Just wondering if anyone else has had that problem....

I had the same taste issue with Walmart's powdered sugar and MMF. If they're out of everything but their brand, I'll go to a different grocery store to buy a real brand.

They may use more cornstarch/fillers and less actual sugar than the other brands.
I agree, i used it for buttercream in december and it was really gritty. I ended up going to get C&H and mixed them together 2:1 of the good stuff to the great value recipe i made to help make it taste better. I haven't had issues with it tasting off though.

I've used Great Value and never had any problems with it. I love their shortening for buttercream. I think it has a higher fat content or something because I get way different results with Great Value shortening.

I have had problems with the Walmart brand PS consistency. Now I only use Dominos. It is about $.50 more a bag, but well worth it.

I agree on their shortening. They have the highest trans fat amount of any shortening i've found locally and it works much better for me than the ones that don't have any.

I used GV powder sugar for years, but recently the bags at my store have come from beet sugar (makes gritty icing) so I stopped buying it.
