The Acme by me has canned pumpkin in the organic isle.

Giant Eagle and Wal Mart are both out and Wal Mart said they are not expecting any until mid November.

I have had several large orders in the past month and all included pumpkin cake. I about had a heartattack when I couldn't find any.

I make pumpkin puree more often than buy it. I used to bake the pumpkins but switched to cooking them in my micro a long time ago.

Heres a link on how to cook fresh pumpkin in the oven or the micro. The micro instructions are the same as what I do. I always make extra and freeze the puree in 1 cup & 2 cup measures. Needs a bit of draining because of the freezing of course. Its very easy and tastes great!

If it is out of stock in your area, ask your grocery store to hold as many cans as you want. They will call you when it comes in and you won't have to worry about the cans being off the shelf because of the demand when they do come in. The store in my area that will do this is Giant/Martin's, but I am sure many will do this.

My daughter called to tell me she bought 6 cans of Libby's for me at Stop & Shop. I guess Nestle's/Libby's lived up to their promise of having it on the shelves by the end of the month. I still haven't seen it in the stores.

For those who can still not find the Libby's canned Pumpkin---- Sam's Club has a new Libby's product out called Pumpkin & Oatmeal Streusel-topped Bar Kit. This "kit" includes 2 -15 oz. cans of the Libby's pumpkin. So if you are desperate to have this for one of your recipes- there you go!

I'm in the Pacific NW and just bought a three pack of the large cans at Costco last night. Don't know what the status is in the grocery stores but at least we can get our fix! icon_smile.gif

OMG I thought it was just me and my area that was on a pumpkin shortage...I live in PA and 2 weeks ago went everywhere in a 20 mile radius looking for canned pumpkin with NO luck....thank goodness I keep a pretty stocked pantry and had a reserve can. I needed it for a cake order I have (chocolate pumpkin cake, BTW to die for!). I did since find 3 cans by accident in a local ACME, and grabbed them like they were canned gold. I couldn't believe that there was none in site, and I didn't realize or think that it was only a seasonal addition. Thanks for posting this and letting me know I wasn't crazy going on the "great pumpkin hunt"... I will def. get a few cans to keep just in case....

I actually have been doing this forever, I dont like the taste of canned pumpkin. I just bake though, it so easy. Get a sugar pumpkin, cut off the top and then cut in half and scoop out the seeds. Cut into large chunks and put it on a baking sheet. Bake at 400 until the pumpkin is soft, think baked potato soft. Pull it out and allow it to cool and then puree in a blender or food pro. I measure out 1 cup increments and freeze it in this little plastic tupperware dohickey. I pop them out and put them in a ziploc. They last forever in the freezer.

You would be amazed at the difference in taste.

ETA: I dont peel the rind off until after its baked. You can just use a big spoon to scoop the flesh from the rind after its baked its so soft and tender that it comes right off.

My brother retired from Nestle's - they have a research facility in Marysille, Ohio. Several years he had to go out of town to help process the pumpkin. He brought back some seeds and for several years grew our own pie pumpkins. They are really different than jack-o-lantern pumpkins. I picked up some cans of pumpkin at Wal-mart last week. I am glad that I don't have to "hoard" them!!

I'm in the midwest and since early summer we have had bare shelves with signs saying there won't be any pumpkin available until September or October due to a pumpkin shortage . Good to hear it is rotating back in!

Gee-I wonder if all of the eBay people are really bakers that will be able to use the pumpkin that they are trying to sell FOR $6.00 -$7.00 a can??? icon_wink.gif I am so thankful that we can find it again.

I remember the pumpkin shortage making my internet news homepage last year. It was because of last year's crops and the heavy rains and they didn't expect it to be a problem last year and that maybe next [this] year it might be hard to come by. I remember buying about a dozens cans of Libby's pumpkin--just in case. I make a lot of pumpkin bread and didn't want to risk it. icon_wink.gif Anyway, I watched my Meijer store for the entire year and at some point after the holiday season, they let the stock run out and filled it with other pie toppings. I've continued to watch and just in the last couple of weeks, I've seen it getting stocked back up. If I had to guess, I'd say that they [Libby?] weren't putting out a lot of it during the year so that they'd have a better stock for the holiday season. I think that for the most part, many people didn't even notice the lack of pumpkin on the shelves until recently.

Sandi:

Lets hope that the pumpkin that is showing up on the shelves at Meijer's now isn't from a previous year's crop. I read in our local paper that Kroger's had plenty in their warehouses but one of the small local grocers was having difficutly getting it. I would have to ask my brother, but I think Libby's (Nestle's) harvested and processed their pumpkins in September/October.

Actually, I thought I was sitting on a gold mine a month ago when I discovered I had a large 15 oz can of pumpkin in my pantry. I probably could have sold it for 50 bucks, LOL !

Anyway, I purchased it last year or the year before but the expiration wasn't until next year. I used it in a pumpkin spice cake for my fiance's birthday and it was great! So I wouldn't be too worried about pumpkin from last year, unless there was something wrong with the crop...
