I am making a baby shower for my husbands cousin. My mother in law is helping to plan the shower and when I mentioned flavors, she said "oh not banana, Grammie (husband's grandma) loves it, but no one else really does" So I ask the mother to be what flavors she likes....first thing she says...banana! ha ha. I dont really think banana is a very popular flavor either, but i guess I have never really made one either! What goes well with banana cake (filling wise)? I dont really want to have to refrigerate though. Has anybody made the banana cake in the cake mix doctor? I can make two flavors, so I feel maybe I should honor the mom to be's wishes for a banana cake...it is her day!

my husband said some people like chocolate with banana... but what about a vanilla pudding filling? I use french vanilla pudding when I make a banana pudding since I don't like too much banana flavor.. just a thought!

When I make my banana cake, I make a cream cheese icing and substitute the vanilla flavoring with banana extract and color the icing with a tiny bit of yellow!

Instead of doing a real banana cake I use a french vanilla cake mix and add banana pudding mix in. It goes great with chocolate, vanilla, or butterscotch pudding. I've also used hot fudge sauce (not hot obviously) and cherry pie filling. A lot of things go great with banana - think of a banana split!

I got a request for a banana cake and was leery about it too but got a lot of compliments. I used a Duncan Hines Banana Supreme cake mix but made the pound cake version and added banana pudding. I also added about a cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips. For the frosting I had to use vanilla buttercream because of the colors but I think chocolate would taste better. A couple people also said that it would have been better with more chocolate chips.

Let me see if I got this straight, when using a cake mix all you do is add the pudding powder & then the usual water, oil & eggs the cake mix ask for?
Someone please explain icon_confused.gif

yes some people add a complimentary flavor pudding (I think the 4 serving size) dry to the mix and then an extra egg.

Thanks everyone for your replies! Nglez, what is CC? cream cheese?

For the Duncan Hines Supreme pound cakes they say to add 1 package of instant pudding mix (the small 4 serving size box). The same amount of vegetable oil (1/3 cup), Increase eggs to 4 (reg recipe is 3). And decrease water to 1 cup instead of 1 1/3. The devils food pound cake with 1 cup or so of chocolate chips is my favorite!!

To add to my original post about the banana cake that I made. I did not particularly care for it because I am not a fan of artificial banana flavoring. If you can find a recommended recipe using mashed bananas I would try that. Good luck!

The Cake Mix Doctor's banana cake recipe started my cake decorating career! No really! My mother in law asked me to make a banana cake for a mother's day party for HER mother. I had never made a banana cake before, looked at lots of recipes, and decided to go with the CMD because I knew it wouldn't be all bad if I started with a mix. People at the party actually freaked out over the cake. My husband's cousin took one bite and said "Oh my God, Kelley, how do you DO that?" I thought it was so funny. A few weeks later the same cousin called me and asked me to make her groom's cake. I signed up for the Wilton classes, and the rest is history.

So yeah...the Cake Mix Doctor's recipe is good, and so is the quick caramel frosting she recommends to go with the banana cake.

The banana cake recipe I used is this one:

http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-1623-0-Banana-Cake-I.html

It turned out very sweet which is why I settled for the Bavarian cream as a filling. The Bavarian cream is really good and it toned down the sweetness of the cake.

Thanks baking girl!

Does anyone think the bavarian cream filling would go good with a lemon cake? & maybe iced with IMBC???
