I see some kids cakes w/ like Dora, Pooh designs and they are not the shaped pans, how is it they draw them perfect onto the cake? Could it be that they are good in drawing, I think that it looks kind of hard to draw that on a cake without messing up.

I think you have two options...one's a projector that projects the image on the cake from above, and then you trace it with icing, or if it's on this site, it's more than likely a frozen buttercream transfer (fbct) There's a tutorial on how to do those, if you're interested. Hope that helps.

If I am short of time and need to draw image, I first ice my cake with bc then cut out a picture of say Pooh Bear (normal white paper) then I lightly spray with water, lay paper on top of cake then very carefully trace the outline with a very long toothpick. Then once the teplate is off the cake I just draw in the blanks with the toothpick then just sort of colour it in. The other easy alternative is FBCT. Which is where you can place (I use glad bake but I know you guys call it something else) put over the image then trace it with bc then colour it in, then pop it in the freezer. Make sure it is very very very frozen before you attempt to transfer onto iced cake. There is an article somewhere on FBCT I suggest you have a look at it because although I know what I am saying makes sense to me it may not make sense to you, if you get what I mean. FBCT is a really effective way to get your cake pretty much picture perfect. Hope this helps..Good luck let us know how you went.

I have also found that wax paper works better than parchment for FBCT's, at least for me. Also, once I place the transfer on the cake, I immediately put it in the freezer, cake and all, for about 15 to 30 minutes. Only because where I live is very humid, and the buttercream tends to soften quickly, especially with any find line detail. Especially black! Once it's set, then I remove the wax paper and go over all the details. Mine never come out perfect, I always have to go back over it, smooth out any creases with a brush, etc. A bit of work, but the end result is great. The projector you're talking about is a KopyKake projector, and a bit pricey. One day I'll invest.......

I did a Dora cake and this is how I did it.
1. Get a picture for the cake.
2. Trace the picture onto waxed paper.
3. Flip the waxed paper over and use piping gel (i used black) for an outline of every detail. Note the picture should appear backwards to you.
4. Set waxed paper in freezer for 15 minutes.
5. Flip waxed paper over on cake and smooth with hand. The heat from your hands will help transfer the piping gel.
6. I then go over the lines with a #2 tip with the piping gel again.
7. Fill in the design with a star tip.

Note on piping gel. You use icing color to make it black. Sorry.
