Hi everyone,
I am curious since I am new to cake and MTC and SCAL. Is one program better than the other? If so why?
Also, is one program easier to use than the other?
I saw the post that MTC is on sale right now, so want to make my decision soon.
Any help would be appreciated.
I have MTC and think it's easier to use then SCAL (I looked at both before buying).

mtaylor10099,I own the SureCuts Alot application software. I like the ease and use of it. However, to be honest I never have used the other that ProvoCraft made, I can't remember now but I read somewhere that you have more uses from the SureCutsAlot than you would with the other. Need to check out You Tube I believe thats where I checked out userability of the two products, there is a lady who evaluated both software applications.

I just got my cricut cake!!!
Imade a few cuts just to test it, and they came out great. I used homemade fondant and wilton fondant. Very nice cuts with both.
I downloaded the SCAL2.0 and had beentrying it out. I've seen what you can do with the MTC, I rather buy the MTC, seems more user friendly than the SCAL... and I haven't been able to do the same things as with the MTC....

kakes4kids- I'm not sure about the Expression, but others have had success with the deep blade housing without doing anything to it.

So I finally got up the courage to try my machine. I still need some practice, but maybe some of you masters can help me.
The first thing I cut out (the doily) came out fine. Then I tried to cut out the "love" font. I couldnt get it off the mat without ripping it. I used satin ice fondant with tylose. I rolled it pretty thin and let it sit out for awhile before cutting. (I also tried the freezing way too). With the shortening on the mat, it just made it stick. Any suggestions?

I don't recommend freezing the mats. In my experience, when you take them out, the fondant just sweats and makes it even worse. The method that works for ME is rolling it thin (about the thickness of a dime) putting the mats in a large plastic bag (I use the one that came with the mats) and letting them sit out overnight. They cut beautifully the next day. Here is a cake I whipped up quickly yesterday to play with my Cricut. All of the white is fondant with tylose, and the blue is gumpaste.
Not my best cake, but I wanted to show how well the Cricut Cake can work.


Here's another quick pic I took of a cut I made the other day. I'm making my husband a Snoopy cake for his birthday and I plan on cutting all the Peanuts figures with my Cricut. The chocolate fondant is Pettinice mixed with gumpaste (would not recommend using Pettinice, didn't cut well at all) and the white is gumpaste. This was before I let my gumpaste sit out overnight, and you can see that his foot did not cut well. Since then I've been using the overnight methods and all my cuts have come out perfectly. I got the design from the MTC Gallery, and it was super easy to cut the layers.

That's great! So would you say the gumpaste is pretty firm by the time you cut it? Even though you have it in a bag overnight? Does it come right off the mat?
I tried to cut some gumpaste that had been sitting for quite awhile. Maybe an hour? it didn't cut well at all.
What speed and pressure are you cutting?

Both the gumpaste and the fondant were pretty firm when it came time to cut them. THe fondant was still pliable enough two wrap around the sides of the cake. The one thing I noticed was that the gumpaste was MUCH easier to move from the mat to the cake as it was pliable, but still firm.

Just a bit confused. Going to buy the cricut cake and I see from reading this forum, that you can use the program MTC or SCAL.
Which one can you make your own designs? I read the article about the differences but it seems to go against what someone on the forum said.
Any thoughts?



Omgoodness, I have read this entire thread, read jodis blog, read the comparison site, went on ebay to check prices and I think I'm going to Michaels tonite to but my Cricut Cake and order my MTC!! Thanks to you all, you have been a very very very big help in my decision.

Hi cc members, I would like to share with you that I have been making edible cupcake wrappers with bottoms out of fondant with my cricut personal and cricut cake machines. I got the wrappers from a free svg file. The good new is that cricut is coming out with a cartridge of cupcake wrappers. I posted my edible cupcake wrappers on cc not to long ago. Check my photos. I love working with the cricut I only use it for fondant. Thanks
