Help? Need Flamingo Cake Ideas

Hi all,
Every year my neighbor's sister throws a "Flamingo" party to celebrate her Bday and to welcome Spring.
Starting a couple of weeks before the party....they "Flock" the yards of people on the guest list in the middle of the night with about 50 plastic Flamingos! My yard was the target for the first time last year and I must say it was pretty funny to go outside and see 50 pink Flamingos staring at me!
Sadly, this year she can't afford to throw the party and it's even sadder because it's her 40th.
So, her sister & a few of us have decided to throw her the party anyway....and keep it a surprise. I get to do the cake.
There will be at least 70 people, so it should be a good sized cake.
I'm trying to rack my brain and come up with a design that's not the typical "tacky" Flamingo. (Hope that makes sense).
I was hoping that out of all the wonderfully talented decorators on here.....someone would be able to help me think of something.
The party is May 1st so I still have a bit of time, but don't want to leave it for last minute.
Thank You!

Do you think the people whose yards have gotten the flock took pictures? It would be fun to get the pictures of everybody's yards full of flamingos and put them on the cake ... even if you just laminate the photos and stick them on. I'd draw a pink flamingo on the cake too.

i love the flamingo idea!! what fun.. okay all i could picture in my head was a four tier stacked cake covered in black fondant with about a hundred gumpaste/fondant famingos picked into it, on the sides, the top..anywhere and everywhere. what a fun idea she gonna love the surprise !!

Flamingo cake could be so cute! I looked on here and found that khoudek has an amazing flamingo cake. Maybe you would want to check into it. HTH! Have fun!

I love Flamingo's!! What about doing like a big base cake either rectangular or square, on top of it several houses (more like a small neighborhood); with lots and lots of hibiscus flowers (spring time), trees, etc... and in front of one of the houses, 40 small flamingos in the front yard facing the door and staring at "her" (fondant figure) with a Happy Birthday sign...just like she always do for her parties...
Good Luck!!!

I've had this link bookmarked for a while, it has a tutorial for amazing feathers - http://thefondanistafiles.blogspot.com/2009/11/utah-chocolate-show.html
Thought it might be helpful.
I would do a 2 or 3 tier with flamingo fondant cut outs around each tier (change direction with each tier) and a huge plume of pink feathers coming out of the top!

I adore flamingos! So, the question really is, do you want to go way over the top:

or keep it simple:

or just fun:

Whatever you choose to do, I'm sure it will be fabulous!

Thank you all for your great ideas and for the helpful links. I just wasn't getting any inspiration from the Flamingo cakes I had googled online & I knew I could count on my fellow CC'rs for help.
I especially like the feather link Bunsen I just might give it a try.
And you are right Candicemorgannicholson, Khoudek's Flamingo cake is amazing. I like the Flamingos with tall legs...they're so happy.
I just bought a Flamingo cookie cutter so I'm thinking Fondant flamingos and feathers for sure.
I'll post pictures, but the party isn't until May 1st, so it may be awhile.
Thanks again
I attached a photo of my yard from last year...enjoy![/img]
