Ok so I'm making a cake for my nephews birthday party (tomorrow). I need my fondant to be grey. Sounded simple enough to me, white and black make gray. So I bought wiltons black icing gel color. Only BIG problem it turning my white fondant purple NOT gray!!!!!!!!! Any tips would be more the greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I JUST went thru this the other day. (See my submarine cake) My fondant turned purple from the Wilton black also. Use leaf green to turn it to a nice grey. Just don't user too much or then you'll be adding in violet to off set the green! Let me know how it works for you!

i had the same problem....
we used silver dust and it turned into grey
Good luck!!

I don't know exactly what shade of grey you want, but I recently made a mushroom cake (in my pics) and used Kraft brand chocolate swirl marshmallows to make MMF. (I got them at Target)
Not only did it turn out a perfect color without using any added coloring, but it tasted WONDERFUL! The sweet flavor was softened by the chocolate flavoring.
Kraft also has caramel swirl marshmallows which I bought, but haven't used yet. They are more of a yellow brown color.

Ok everyone my cake is done!!!!!! Thanks to everyone's tips it is the PERFECT shade of gray. Did a lil drawing to engrave marking and added some silver pearl dust. I think my nephew will thoroughly enjoy his allspark cake tomorrow! Can't wait to get some good pics of it in the morning and get them online!!!!!
Thanks again to EVERYONE for your help!
