Best Bulk Cake Mix? (Compared To Dh)
Business By Cakepro Updated 16 May 2017 , 7:43pm by classiccake

We've used a few different kinds at work. Gold Medal, GFS and another supplier brand. They all stunk in my opinion. Lots of little clumps when sifting and they smell and taste weird to me. I bake only from scratch now at work because I'm that unhappy with the way the mixes taste.
I also prefer DH brand when I use a mix and I don't think they sell them in bulk. I know Pillsbury sells by bulk because a CC member buys it in bulk from them (Classiccakes, I think?) She's really happy with the mixes. I think she's based in IN so you might want to pm her. Hopefully she can help you out some.

dawn cake mix is good....the kind that you use oil and water...NOT the kind you just add water in...did the math tho...not cheaper than the boxed mix, i got to paying 75.00 per 50 pound bag,...the carrot cake mix they make is surprisingly good.

I've heard the Dawn brand is good also, but I haven't tried it yet so I can't give an opinion on that one. A few bakers on here swear by it.
If you take the $75 divided by 50 #'s of the cake mix. Little cakes is paying $1.50 per pound. That's really not that bad of a price where I'm located.
If you like buying the DH brand and can't find something economical for the price or up to your standards you could talk to a grocer about buying a few cases (a case of DH has 15 boxes in it) for you. The cheapest place I found for DH mixes where I live is Walmart at $1.16 per box (the grocery stores are around $2.50 per box). I'm in the north though and see you are in TX so that probably isn't the case where you live.

I buy DH with My MVP Card at Foodlion for .89 a box, juts bought 250 boxes,,,,,,hard to beat it with a little something extra I add in

I still use good ole DH! I had the Dawn Foods Rep come in and show us what they offer, but I've heard too many people say their bulk mixes aren't good. I can't afford the expense of buying a bunch "just to try it" so I'll go with unpopular opinion and stay away from it. For now, I use DH and scratch baking! Customers can't tell the difference between when I scratch bake and use DH anyway! I always get told that my cakes are the best they've ever tasted! It's my "ancient Chinese secret!!" LOL!!

Boy, Dawn Foods' red velvet cake mix is THE BOMB. I still have 50 pound sacks of their white and sponge cake mixes to try but have been too busy. I'll never make RV from scratch again, though.
Robzc8ks, see if your Dawn rep will bring you samples. They've been very generous with me.

I love Dawns white and yellow cake mixes! I've used tons and tons of it over the years. It's equal to or better the DH. You can mix up large batches and store them in your refrigerator, then just bake off what you need as you need it. That's a great time saver.
Sometimes ordering from them can get confusing because they have so many similar items with slight differences. So I always keep my old invoices so I can go by the product number instead of the name.

hmmmm...perhaps I've been told wrong! From the sounds of it, maybe Dawn ain't so bad! Only problem for me right this minute is that I don't NEED 50lbs of cake mixes stacked up in the back! Maybe once we get busier with cake orders I'll give ole Dawn a try!
Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

I just recently started working a job where I have to use bulk mixes! Really freaking out about it! Do they perform well with fondant, and do you add ingredients, like with Wasc to make more durable???
I doctor my bulk mix as well..I hate straight mix. But I use Pillsbury Plus. It is really good. I tried Dawn at a bakery expo and wasn't that impressed with it. It was reallllly sweet! Has it changed?

You are my new best friend! What is the Pillsbury link? Anyone know? Going to google it now but just in case someone had it handy.

I have seen many on here that buy bulk from Dawn and like the taste texture etc. What does a 50lb bag cost on average?

just incase anyone is interested, Bakemark now offers DH in 50 lb bags. I haven't tried it, becuase I dont care of the stuff, but my rep recently told me about it.
I think they just have the white, yellow and chocolate, but they have they fruito stuff if you want to flavor it. (I LOVE that stuff!)

Fruito Stuff?? Please enlighten me!

oh this stuff is so good! Its put out by Westco...we buy it from our Bakemart rep. It comes in cherry, strawberry, raspberry. blueberry, and orange. You add it to your white pound cake and it flavors it. You can even see the chunks of fruit in the baked product, so its pretty too. It is not super sweet and adds a lot of nice texture. I love the stuff!

I really like Dawn creme cake yellow and chocolate. Very moist and holds well for sculpting.

If your serious about using their product, they will give you a sample. I am using their white cake with oil and water. It is pretty good.
They also have a great chocolate for dipping strawberries and cake pops that is awesome, it is already prepped all you do is heat up in the microwave and your ready.

Hello. I contacted Dawns Foods today and not only are they sending me samples of the various cake mixes but unlike pilsbury they offer smaller bags and not just 50 ponders. Yeah
