Does anyone have a recipe or tips for what to use for decorating an ice cream cake? Is it 100% ice cream or some other combination?

Thanks,

Tonya

I made ice cream cakes for the first this Christmas. I covered the cakes with a mixture of vanilla ice cream and cool whip and that worked great. I am still trying to come up with a good frosting to pipe with. I was able to color some fudge green for a pine branch. On one cake, I tried just cool whip to make some snowflakes but that didn't work out so well. It got too warm from my hands. I'll be interested to see what others have found to work.

I've wondered this as well. I know some people used Pastry Pride, but that is not available in my area. Or at least, I haven't seen it.

I worked at Baskin-Robbins a lifetime ago and we frosted the ice cream cakes with "decorating vanilla", which was just vanilla ice cream that was whiter than regular vanilla. Decorating (borders, writing, piping, etc) was all done with buttercream.
