I posted on here today for advise for making a flamingo cake for my daughter's 1st birthday. I wan't it to look like this:

but since I've never decorated a cake before I was a little nervous about it and decided to give it a test run. First I tried making a flamingo pie, it came out like this:

pretty neat, huh? I think I might do this same idea but with a turkey over pumpkin pie for Thanksgivng!
Then I gave the cake a shot too. I am SO happy with the way it came out and I had such a great time making it!

I think when I make it for the "big day" I will make it a little bigger (this was an 8" cake) and leave room to write Happy Birthday Isla! on the edge.
WDYT???

I think it looks so good! You may just be a natural at cakes.

IMO it would look even better if you covered the whole height in pink and left out the white space. Either way, it is a winner!

i saw your original post yesterday and i felt your pain since i too really don't care for working with fondant. it looks like you did a great job and probably learned some new skills in the process!! it will be perfect for your daughter's birthday party and it looks delicious! plus the pie version.. how cool is that! you did a great job!

the pie looks incredible, did you just use a colored egg wash to color the crust on top? Looks soooooo cool!

Love the pie, what a neat idea!
I've done the classic pie crust leaf cutout for a pumpkin pie but your idea is way cooler!
Love the cake as well, not too shabby for a practice run!
