3D Football Helmet Cake Tutorial?
Decorating By lv2bake Updated 4 May 2015 , 4:44am by lovesensation24

My helmets both had 3 layers for the bottom...
The soccer ball pan sucks...it's a pain to get right. I ended up filling the pan half-way only, using 2 flower nails, putting a pan of hot water on the rack below (in the oven), and using homemade bake-even strips because the edges get so crispy (since it takes over an hour to bake).

Should I do 3? Everyone was saying 2 so that is what I did. But they are both 3 inches high, so will that make up the difference, do you think???

Okay, thanks again, Flourpots. Just a local school team here in town. Nohing big except for thebirthday boy!!!

I finally got the cake done this weekend. The birthday boy and his friends all loved it! That made my day, totally!!!! Thanks so much for the help, Flourpots, KittieKakes and all others!!!!

You're welcome, but I didn't do anything ...
It looks awesome!! You nailed it, baby!!...it looks just like the real one beside it!!
I love the shape and how smooth it is...did you use BC or ganache under your fondant, and what kind of fondant is that, by the way??
Love it!!

Oh, you did alot!!! Just the support and the information you gave me meant so much to me! That is why I love being in a caking community!!! I used BC under the fondant. The fondant was Wilton's mixed with some mmf and flavored with Lorann oil in Cotton Candy flavoring. Came out smooth as Ice without a problem!

Love it! I just commented on your photo, but wanted to come back and tell you your cake version of the helmet is better than the real one, lol!

Thanks for the positive comment, andpotts!! It was some stress for me, though. When I was done, I swore that I'd never do it again. But now, I am anxious for another order for one!!! Isn't that funny??? Actually, the face mask was less stressful than the carving for me. But now I think I may like cake carving even more!!

I sooo glad there people like you that post the step by steps.... this really helps..... thanks kittyskakes for the photos~

Thank you for the helmet face mask tip.... hopefuly my mask will come out looking ok LOL

It's been brought to my attention that the link I posted on pg. 1 a year ago is no longer working, so the instructions for my little avatar helmet are here: http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-613242-foofball.html

Thanks so much for the great instructions and pics. I'm making one for a grooms cake of a dear friend and think i may have gotten in over my head
I've seen you photos, you can do it. The carving really isn't so bad. I didn't have a ball pan so I just carved mine from a stack of 8" rounds and even that was ok. If you use a ball pan, then you really just have to carve the front out a bit. It also might be easier if you just cover it in buttercream rather than trying to wrap fondant around an odd shape. Do a test run if you have time and see what works for you.

heres a great pic that a recent cc'er posted, I love it...she gives some details in her photo comment for that pic. I know you dont have 5 days to do the mask part but its just too cool:

This is a great post! I am new on the site and this is JUST what my nephew wants for his 10th birthday! (now to figure out the Patriots and the Vikings Logos...)
Will this post now be marked in my history? Because I have had nothing but trouble finding it to start with. Just being new and confused!

Hi Everyone!
I used the amazing KittisKakes tutorial and created the mask for a cake for my husband for tomorrow. I did the mask over a week ago and it has been drying. I tried to move it, or see if it was ready to be moved and one of the side bars snapped off! I have not been able to get it to go back on. I dont have tylose over here and really need some advice ASAP on how to fix this one!

hi there!!! your helmet is so nice! I clicked on the link with your directions and it seems to be broken .. Do you mind emailing it to me PLEASE
my email is michelle@memories20038.com

I've done 3 helmets and I think they've all turned out different. My favorite is the Saints. My Dallas Cowboys looks a little eggy to me. I use 3-10" and 1-6"...I also save my domes that I cut off and used on the back and various other places. I was too scared to make the mask so I ordered it from Academy Sports. They are cheap...super sturdy and saved my sanity. They come in black so I had to cover the LSU & Dallas one in fondant...which took longer than carving the helmet! I had that mask on and off the cake so many times during carving...I can't image not being able to handle the gumpaste one like I did the bought one.

Hi,
I tried making the football helmet face mask last night and it was hard for me to assemble on the rounded canister. How do you get the "logs" on the end to stay in place on the rounded canister? Is there a quicker way to get the 50/50 gumpaste and fondant to dry faster (like can i put in in the refrigerator)? thank you.
