Has anyone iced a pillow cake with buttercream only; no fondant? I'm doing a b-day cake for a 6 yr old and she wants 'that yummy white iicng'. This will be my first attempt at a pillow cake. I've looked through the 134 pics in the gallery and looks like the majority-if not all-all fondant covered. Please advise me!! I need it. Maybe I'll just do a pratice cake and let the DH and DS have at it! TIA!

Hi there, I just made a princess pillow cake with buttercream icing back in December for my daughters 6th birthday. It was actually pretty easy. You can view the picture in my photos. What I did was basically look through the tutorial on the main page of CC on making a pillow cake. I baked the cakes, cooled and then froze them for a few hours. I then put both of the flat bottoms of the cakes together and filled them with buttercream and then carved the pillow shape with a serrated knife. I did a crumb coat and then stuck it in the fridge for about 20-30 minutes. Once I took it out of the fridge I frosted the cake with the pink buttercream I had made, let it slightly crust and smoothed it with a combination of viva paper towels and a small foam roller. Then went on to decorating. Most of the decorations were Royal icing (flowers) and fondant and the tiara was white chocolate. It was really easy and came out pretty nicely for my first try. If you have any specific questions just let me know. Thanks!
Breanne

Yup, absolutely! Just make sure that you do put the crumb coat on after carving and then fully ice after. If you use a crusting BC, using Viva to help smooth will definitley make the process a lot easier. thumbs_up.gif

Yea!! At least now I know it's been done.

bre0525: I did see yours when I went through the first time! I really like the colors-that's what the little girl wants-pink & purple!

missyek: I knew you'd know how to do it!

Thank you both!!! I have yet to try the Viva or the roller methods of smoothing buttercream. My DH still wants me to make a test cake, so I'll try that over the weekend and post pics!

Are you looking for a specific recipe to a specific cake flavor or are you trying to find the How-to instructions for the pillow cake? Welcome, to CC too! thumbs_up.gif

I think that buttercream would be great. I love buttercream and I love the challenge of decorating with it to have the same look as fondant. If you use the Viva method you'll be able to do it!

sorry! im really knew at all this and i dont know most of the terminology. ive baked a lot of cakes! but to decorate them ive onlu ever used my own designs and used marzipan and 'normal' packey icing (the sort you use on pancakes!).

what is buttercream? whats the difference? does it work better than marzipan to cover a cake beautifully and smoothly? how do you make it? if i were to go to the supermarket what would it be called? (im in australia...)

i must sound pretty silly, but ive jumped in the deep end!

Well, here is the link to the article: http://www.cakecentral.com/article66-How-To-Make-A-Pillow-Cake.html I wrote that one, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask away! icon_biggrin.gif

Buttercream is just another type of spreadable icing--if you look in the recipe section there are a ton of different recipes. You should have no problems covering the pillow cake in marzipan. And Black Forest Cake should be fine. thumbs_up.gif Just make sure you do freeze the cake first before carving.

Hmm, that is something that I did not save because I did my tiara out of gumpaste and was comfortable with that. Let me look around and see if I can find a link--or if Jan is reading, maybe the link queen can beat me to it! icon_biggrin.gif
