
I am working on a 4th of July cake (for a County Fair contest) and am having trouble getting a true royal blue fondant(I'm somewhere between baby blue and royal blue right now). I don't want to cheat and purchase the ready made colors and was hoping someone had some tips on here. I tried a search first of the forum and didn't come up with anything.
I've mixed about 2.5 pounds of ready made Wilton fondant with 3/4 of a container of CK Royal Blue powder coloring. Should I add more powder coloring?
No one will be eating the cake so it doesn't matter how it tastes. I don't have an airbrush yet so I can go that route.
Please help! I have to have it completed by Wednesday.

I've used powder colors before and it took an absolute ton of the powder to get the color I needed....and then I wasn't really satisfied with the consistency of the color...it kind of streaked here and there.
I just colored fondant blue last thursday for a cake on Saturday....I used pre-made fondant and Ateco brand gel paste coloring. It didn't take but maybe a 6th of the bottle to get a perfect deep & vibrant royal blue. And it was much easier & quicker to work into the fondant. I've used Wilton brand gel paste colors before too, but I found that the red and blue required that I use over have of the little jar to achieve the right shade/depth of color I needed.
all in all - when you need a large amount of fondant in colors like red or blue - gel paste colorings are the only way to go IMO.

I sure am glad you posted this cause I have to color some fondant blue tomorrow. I have used both the powder and gel and it seems that with fondant, gel works better cause the powder dries out the fondant (at least it has for me) and I have to use crisco to get it more pliable. Plus, it seems that you have to use more of the powder to get the deeper color.

If you make the marshmellow fondant (recipe on this site), add your color after your marshmellows are melted but before you add sugar, you can almost always get any color your looking for. I have only used the wilton gel color so i don't know if powder will work the same way. The MMF tastes so much better than the already made also. It really isn't difficult to make, so it might be worth a try if you're having a hard time getting your fondant to the color you want. Good luck!!

I don't know where I got the powdered fondant but thought I'd try it since I had it. I will try finding the Ateco gel coloring today and if not go with Wilton. I was wondering what MMF stood for, I think I just figured it out. I will try it later this week for sure.
As soon as the cakes are done I will post pictures.

Hi..gel does work the best and I have used the powder but I have found that if you mix the powder with some lemon extract to make a paste, it works much better. I find for the richer colours..I almost have to use an entire jar of gel and then some depending on the amount of fondant.
