I have been asked to do a 1st birthday for a boy with music/musical instruments as the theme. There is no invitation, just asked to use bright colours and the musical instruments.

I would love to do a funky whimiscal with primary colours (blue, red and yellow) but where and how do I incorporate the musical instruments into this thing?

My brain just doesn't go 1st birthday and instruments together!!! Help please!

This isn't too much instruments as it is just one but i thought it was super cute and maybe it will give you some inspiration.HTH

How about some small toy instruments around the cake that can be played with later? Make the cake look like a drum?

Xylophone is great. Why don't you look up some of the "first act" musical toys and you can get ideas on one year old musical instruments. I like the drum idea too. My kids have these castinets? spelling? and xylophone, plus the triangle thing. These should be easy to recreate on a cake.

The xylophone cake

I think this is the cutest cake! It has all the requirements. Primary Colors and musical instruments. The think the birthday boy and his little friends would love something like this! In fact, I saved this link to use for upcoming b-day cakes I may have!

Why not do the xylophone and then use 6" rounds to make drums and maybe a "loafpan" keyboard as well. Those are really good "One Year Old" instruments.

Here is a cake that I had in my ideas folder on my computer. I can't give credit to the artist I found it a long time ago.

Thanks for putting on your idea caps .... the request for a 6" and 9" round and go from there. I like the picture of the drum, could do that on the bottom layer in primary colours, but the top layer .... hmmmm

The xylophone (sp?) is really cute but not what the customer had in mind, will store that one away for future orders! : )

Keep on with the suggestions, great so far! Thanks everyone!

If you still want a whinsical cake you can have it where you have a couple of instruments on the side of each and have musicnotes that float up and connecteach layer. Also you can put a large music note on top layer that says Happy birthday with the little boys name.
