I was watching a program the other night where they were making I think they were whoopie pies, anyhow... Her recipe used "sour milk". I know that it is milk with vinegar added. I thought that it looked kinda gross... It had this curtled clumps on top of the milk. What is the advantage of using this in place of buttermilk?

My MIL uses this and her reasoning when I asked her was two fold. She'd have to go out and buy buttermilk as she doesn't have it in the house routinely and then she said buttermilk is more expensive. Don't know if that is true or not though.

I use sour milk when I don't have buttermilk, which unless I pre-plan, I never have buttermilk. My mother also did this. I prefer buttermilk but sour works in a pinch.
