Hi there-
I have a wedding cake to do for tomorrow. I have been working for the last 2 hours on trying to cover a 16" square cake with MMF. I CAN"T SEEM TO DO IT!
Are there any tips or tricks for such big cakes?
All I have is the little fondant mat that came with the Corse 3 kit. I have tried to cover the cake all in 1 big sheet. I then tried to cover just the sides and then the top....can't even get started w/o the MMF ripping or sticking to itself. Then I tried to cover half the cake, but again, no luck. I am open for ANYTHING at this point.
I am so frustrated I could scream! or cry

I can think of a couple of different things you can do. First let me tell you that I have never worked with MMF.
1) You can go to a store , such as Wal-Mart, and buy their plastic that you use to make table cloths with. It's really thin and you buy it by the yard on a huge roll. Anyway, roll it out on this, then flip onto the cake and peel off.
2) Roll it out to your desired diameter, then loosley roll onto your rolling pin and un-roll onto the cake. Kind of like a pie crust.
I HTH. Hopefully it was all clear!

Well, this won't help because I just fought for hours with a 14" square and some MMF til I was ready to toss the whole thing at the wall and had powdered sugar everywhere but up my nose!
After putting it on and taking it off like 6 times!!! (fortunately it was a styrofoam dummy cake) I ended up rolling it big enough on a well greased (or sugared? can't recall) large fondant roll-n-cut mat and flipped the whole thing onto the cake, then peeling the mat off the MMF. It stuck to the mat in many places, and the only thing that saved it was that I REFUSED to start over, so I just smoothed the whole thing with my fondant smoothers, and amazingly, it turned out ok.
I learned two things.
1. I'll probably NEVER EVER use MMF on large diameter cakes again, 12" max.
2. If that had been a real cake, the whole thing would have been a giant disaster, they'd have had to call off the wedding, and I'd have had to move to some distant town where no one knows me. Or I'd have had to find a store open with enough Petinice to cover the whole cake and start over!
I feel your pain and hear your screams--keep trying; you'll get it.

If you use crisco on whatever suface you use, I heard it won't stick!

Roll it out on a vinyl shower curtain.... that is one time.... that gives you plenty of room.
I use powdered sugar when I roll mine out... doesn't dry it out...
when you go to transfer it to the cake, it might be too large to roll on your roller. Try transferring it to a cake board and carrying it over that way.
Hope this helps... sounds like you might have it a little too thin or too dry

These are all great ideas.
I have tried several times to roll it onto the roller, but it is simply too big and either tears orsticks to itself.
I will try the parchment paper thing as that is all that I have available at this time. I am also enlisting the help of my husband...I need another set of hands also.
I will keep you posted and let you know how it goes.
Thank you soooooo much for all the input, ideas, and support. I so appreciate it!

Ha Ha! I am so glad that you know EXACTLY what I am going through right now.

Okay, so here's the update....
I used the parchment paper as cupcake55 suggested. I taped 2 pieces together so that it would be big enough. I greased the paper. After rolling it out, I had my husband come and lift it up to hang vertically while I guided it onto the cake.
IT WORK BEAUTIFULLY and in a matter of minutes instead of hours. It was soooo quick and easy this way.
Thanks so much for saving my sanity! You guys are so great.

I use cornstarch to stop it sticking & have plastic sheets to cover my table. I bought som 2" pvc piping about 30" long & when I have finished rolling out my MMf or Satin Ice, I loosley roll it on the pvc pipe, you can still use the parchment paper too.

Wow! Your first idea is something I never thought of. Good one!
