I'm making a cake for my daughter's student teacher's going away party. Their classroom theme is "Camp Starz" so I was going to make a sheet cake and pipe in lots of stars (about 21) and would like to "write" each of the kids names' by the stars.

Do I use a writing tip with a pastry bag? Or will that come out too large?

Any suggestions, tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated! I'll even take any suggestions for a different idea for the cake itselficon_smile.gif!

Thanks!
Lisa

Depending on the size of the cake you can use a tip # 2 up to 5 and just pipe the names with buttercream. Or if you want something more even in size what I would do is print in your computer the names in the size and font style you want and then cover the print with parchment paper, trace the names with royal icing, wait for it to dry and peel the names (very carefully) and place them on your cake. If you used fondant cut-out stars on your cake instead of piping them, you could write the names on with edible marker and that would be very easy

If you hold your wrist while your writing, it should help steady your hand. And they say to move your whole arm, not your wrist. Good luck!

nefgaby, I love that parchment paper idea! Might try that tomorrow. I've spent WAY too much time on previous cakes cutting letters out of fondant! How long should I wait for the royal to dry?

Hi, depending on the size of the font, I usually wait 24hrs, that is the first thing I do and the last piece of decoration that goes in the cake. If it is something larger, I would wait 48 hrs. (by larger I mean a font size 24+) HTH! icon_biggrin.gif

Crimsonhair...if you buy the markers Wilton has two types of tips..fine and regular. I recommend the fine tip ones..

Sorry...didn't want to hijack this thread..just a quick note about the markers...

When I write on my cakes I first use the same color icing as my cake top and write what I want, then I use what ever color I want on the finished cake over top of the white icing. I usually use #2 for the 1st writing and then #3 for the next. If I goof up I can usually smooth out the first writing and start over.

after you pipe your stars you can take a the flat side of your basketweave tip and do a "banner" like this..

across your star and then you can pipe with your round tip to write with

Thank you all for your quick replies and suggestions!

Using fondant stars with the edible marker sounds the easiest! However, I've never worked with fondant! Should I just use Wilton's pre-packaged fondant in the colors that I want and cut out the stars with small cookie cutters?

Thanks again!

Yup...you just roll it out to maybe 1/8" or thereabouts..(use a tiny bit of Crisco on rolling pin and rolling surface)...cut fondant out with the cutters...it will be soft so be careful when you are writing on it...

You should be good to go.. make sure you post the pics when done icon_smile.gif

Spend lunch times with CC these days..lol!!

the crisco will make it difficult to roll out the fondant as it will stick..you soften the fondant with a little crisco in your hands, knead it...then put some powdered sugar on your surface and roll out your fondant.

Keep your rolling pin dusted also, by rubbing your hand across the rolling pin so the fondant wont fold back onto itself.

Then you cut out your stars...you can wipe them off with a pastry brush, a paper towel ...brush off the excess powdered sugar..let them set up for a bit.

I find that when I write on my fondant right away, the point of the marker seems to make a groove.

My Wilton teacher had us do the crisco thing on our mat and rolling pin...when we put the fondant on the cake and it was time to smooth, we dusted the cake with the powdered sugar and cornstarch and we did smoothed with our hands..

I will give your way a shot the next time I am working with fondant!
Thnx for the tip!

Another question...can I only use those edible markers on fondant? I'm assuming they won't work just on the frosting itself?

Cutting out the stars from fondant and writing the kids' names on them sounds the easiest but I'm a little nervous working with the fondant since I've never done so before. I've also heard that it doesn't taste very good. Is this correct?

Ideally, I'd like to go with my original idea of piping in all 21 stars with the star tip but don't know if I can add their names. All of the tips everyone gave me sound great but I don't know if I can really do it icon_redface.gif

Thanks again!

if you can make cookies you can do this. roll out your fondant use a star cutter to cut the stars out. Let them sit for a few hours and then use a marker to write on them.

Easy peasy puddin' n pie!

Don't doubt your ability
