Buttermilk Gone Bad? How Would You Know?

goodness, it says that it is to be sold by sept. 10. i smelled it, it smells like buttermilk,
if it was my family, i'd do it, but it's for a cake for sale.....
guess i'm going to walmart....

that would be a very good answer....i wonder if someone can answer it based on the milk itself and not the date on the carton.
you can also make the butter milk though instead of having to take a trip.
in full fat whole milk add lemon juice and it will make the buttermilk.

With buttermilk, I don't go past the date since you can't tell that it's bad. If you were to pour yours out with a 9/10 date, it would probably have big lumps in it. I poured out a 9/20 carton last week that has been sitting in my fridge and it was lumpy.



I have been wondering the same thing myself for a while.... can you use buttermilk a month away from expiration? I mean doesn't it just become more.... buttermilky?? LOL ok I mean sour and tangy. If you shake it to disperse the lumps, would it still be good as long as you were using it to cook with? When is too long really too long?
