OK, so I was in Costco this morning and they are putting up artificial Christmas trees. Whoa, Christmas!!!!!! So, I started thinking about what to get everyone on my list and I'm stuck at my grandson's gift. He will be right at 4 months old at that time. I was wondering if any of you have a baby around that age and if so I am hoping that you can give me an idea of what toy he/she has that you can't imagine him/her being without. I know that 4 months old is still pretty young but I'm sure that there are lots of things out there that a baby that age can enjoy. I'd just love to hear from someone who has a child that age and can share your experience. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!

While it was/is pretty much hit & miss with my three little ones, all three really enjoyed the "Baby Einstein" videos. They have so many to choose from at different age levels. If you are opposed to letting little ones watch a little tv now & then, my next suggestion would be some sort of baby gym deal; my three really enjoyed theirs. Or an entertainment saucer. My youngest DD (1 year next Wednesday icon_surprised.gificon_eek.gificon_cry.gif ), still likes being in hers. She has no interest in walking or crawling or any of that jazz. icon_lol.gif

Baby Gym: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009XS9QA/?tag=cakecentral-20

Of course, you can never go wrong with a cute stuffed animal. With all the baby stuff, the two things that make her really happy & smile are her stuffed bunny and puppy. icon_rolleyes.gificon_biggrin.gif

HTH & have fun shopping! thumbs_up.gif

I think I would do clothes, or something useful. Maybe set up a savings account. At four months I wouldn't give videos, or even toys for that matter.

My grandson is 4 months old and just popped in his first tooth, so I say go for teething toys.

At that age, they seem to like things that make crinkly noises or mirrors, things that react when they touch them. I like the baby saucer idea also for something bigger. They'll stay with that for months and it's nice even when they're little icon_smile.gif

I know a lot of people are anti-tv for children, but I agree with previous posters on the Baby Einstein videos. My boys loved those at that age. They are only 1/2 hour long, so it's not like you're using them for a babysitter or turning them into tv drones! icon_smile.gif

I also agree with a teething ring, anything grippable they can get their little hands around. I remember at that age, it wasnt so much about playing with things as it was just holding onto them. Also love the exersaucer idea if you're not on a tight budget.

At that age, and up until about two, the favorite gift will be the boxes that the actual gifts came in. icon_wink.gif
At that age, they are growing out of everything, FAST! I like to give clothes, 12 month clothes will work best for the long term, they probably have 6 month clothes to the rafters!

My son and I loved our shopping cart cover. I know it sounds strange but it had crinkle stuff, mirrors, toys attached, a detachable pillow, and peak a boo flaps. It rolled up like a small duffle bag and when unrolled it covers the entire seat of a shopping cart and the handle. I did not worry about the last snotty nosed kid that touched the cart. My child never came in contact with it. We used it in the house on the floor for tummy time too.

When my children were that age they weren't really in to videos or toys for that matter. What I would give is something more useful like clothes. The bad part about clothes is you have to get them pretty close to when you want to give them since they grow out of things so quickly. Another idea is bath stuff. Bubble bath, baby shampoo, a soft fluffy hooded towel, bath toys, etc...You get the idea. Stuff like that would definately get used. Plus it can be given for any age group. Even my 8 yr old DD would like something like that. HTH.

Baby Einstein videos!! Without a doubt!! I have used them with my oldest two children and they were life savers! My oldest wanted to be held 24/7 and getting a shower was awful...he'd scream and cry the entire time I had him down. And then came along the Einstein videos. They saved my life. I could pop in a video, put him in his bouncy in front of the tv and take a quick shower. I could prop him up on my bed (which was right against the tv stand as well as computer desk), pop in the video and have half an hour of computer time. It was a miracle. Incontrollable crying fits could be stopped with an Einstein video. They are now 4 and 5 and still pop them in from time to time. And for those who are anti-tv, I swear these videos do not harm children. In fact, my youngest didn't/doesn't watch the videos (doesn't watch any tv) and he has not picked up things (colors, words, shapes) as quickly as his brother and sister did. The videos did not hurt them, and in fact seemed to help them with certain things.

If they don't have one already, the excersaucers are great and that's about the age all my grandkids have started using them.

I would say definitley the exersaucer is a good idea. Also my nephew was 3 months old on his 1st Christmas, and I bought some toys that were for 6 months and up that they could save...because it's such a long time 'till their birthdays. Good luck!

Oh, that exersaucer looks so cute. I love the one that lanibird gave me a link to. I know that someone bought him the rainforest jumperoo. So, I'm thinking that is alot like the exersaucer. So, maybe I shouldn't go with the saucer. But darn, that thing is so cute. Thanks again everyone for such great ideas. thumbs_up.gif

Books are always wonderful. My son loved being read to, starting at about 2 weeks-- maybe younger. All they care about at that age is hearing the voice and maybe the rhythm of it. You will never go wrong with that. Another great idea that you could do and would be very much appreciated is one of those "Grandmother Remembers" books. (And/or "Grandfather Remembers" . Most bookstores carry several of them and I gave them to my son's grandparents and great-grandparents. Only one has given it back. I hope the others will. It's all about your life and memories and favorite things. I think anyone would LOVE it.

My mom and dad always gave our "babies" bonds in their names. 50 dollar bonds. So until my dad died every year he added a bond icon_smile.gif

The shopping cart cover is a great idea its a gift for mom and baby espcially in the flu season. icon_cry.gif and right about then he will be learning to sit up on his own so he will probably be sitting in the cart rather than in his carrier. I could not have imagined life without mine when my DD was that age. The mom would love you.

I enjoy making baby gifts, so I would suggest a fleece blanket for a floor mat. Maybe stuff it so that it is more like a large bean bag bed. Not overlystuffed. Or you could take the fleece material and cut stripes on the ends (ravel look) and tie or sew things of interest for the baby. (Crinkle stuff, plastic mirrors, plastic teething shapes, cloth books, etc.) Anything that will encourage baby to roll or crawl to explore the blanket. Or you could give the baby a whitenoise machine to sleep with. They even come with nightlights.
