So I just realized I don't have a cooling rack for my 12x18 cake that's in the oven (4 minutes left). Any ideas?

I can't believe I didn't think of this ahead of time. DUH. dunce.gif

either the rack from the oven or one from your fridge will work in a pinch

wire refrigerator shelf with soup can to hold up each corner?
window screen and soup cans ?
box fan lying flat?
two 9x13 racks side by side on a cookie sheet?

Be sure to cover the rack-substitute with paper towels before you flip the cake out onto it.

Thanks! I didn't even think of the oven rack!

You don't think the cake will fall in between the spaces, do you?

Really, I feel like such a dummy. I'm the Cake Central attention hog, this evening.

Actually, I just measured and my cooling rack will fit the cake exactly! Phew. False alarm.

and for those with old fashion cook tops -- you know the ones w/ the grids on top like gas ranges and even old fashioned coil electric....

You can also try turning over a cupcake pan.....I've done that before when I've run out of cooling racks.

Hmmmm... I never use a cooling rack. I just flip the pan over onto a sheetpan (on top of a sheet of parchment paper) and leave it inside the pan to cool. Makes the cakes level and keeps the moisture inside.

I don't use racks either. I will let the cake cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes and then turn out on the cake board and leave it to cool on the counter. I will also put the cooled cake in my 2nd oven that is cool to sit over night. This helps to keep it moist with out covering with plastic.
