Urgent! Can I Use Cream Of Tartar Instead????
Decorating By travelingcakeplate Updated 27 Sep 2007 , 2:51pm by travelingcakeplate

I am all out of MP and would like to know if I can use Cream of Tarter instead and still get good results. I only have need for a small amount of RI and really don't want to go to Michaels.
Thanks in advance...

I'm assuming MP = meringue powder, and RI = royal icing?
The answer is no. Cream of tartar is no substitute for either one of those. Cream of tartar is added to eggwhites as a stabilizer.

Ok, what if I make the RI without MP? Will it result in a catastrophe?

You can use egg whites with a touch of cream of tartar and powdered sugar.
People use MP in place of egg white because of the fear of salmonella. EEK! I use MP because it's more convenient for me, but I've got no fear about getting anyone sick and would use plain whites if I had to.

Here's a recipe that doesn't require MP, just hte first of many i found. Try googleing it and see what you come up with.
