I don't think the tatoo would keep me from doing business with you but I do agree that for MANY people it is a problem. I am 34 and I have many friends and family that feel tattoos are gross. I happen to think some can be very tasteful and pretty but when it comes to a business atmosphere I recommend being able to cover it for when that little old lady comes into the shop who doesn't understand that tattoos are an expression and doesn't mean that your a dangerous person like in the old days. lol

It really just depends on whether you want everyone's business or just a select group of individuals. I live in the south and a lot of people have a hard time with tattoos and piercings and they really would take their business elsewhere. More so than when I lived in California or New York. lol

Hmm, I personally wouldn't mind buying from someone who has a tattoo, I have one of my own. When I first got my tattoo a coworker said I would never make it in the business world because of it (even though its on my lower back!). I would say that its up to you, but I think people make harsh judgements when they see tattoos

I don't mind tattoo's either. Sometimes they do tend to point to people who aren't "in best taste" But just as many times they are good kind people icon_smile.gif I Have one also hehe. I guess it depends on the person.

Maybe you could let somene in your family come with you to deliver a cake, if they were really worried?

I agree with those that are suggesting putting it on a less noticable place. My oldest daughter got a Leo zodiac sign tatoo on her right upper arm when she was 19. She's 25 now and engaged to be married in June. She's bought her wedding dress and like all the popular ones of today, her arms are left exposed. She doesn't want the tatoo to show and is going through anxiety fits while trying to find a solution. She still likes the tatoo, but doesn't want it to show for the wedding.

I am a VERY liberal person and being over 50, had wanted a tattoo and a nose piercing when I was 16 BEFORE any of this was a fad!!

I was very AVANT GUARD (?) lol...but I never did get any...and I HAVE designed tattoos for other people..( nothing on a grand scale..just some little bitty things)

Personal prefrence...I prefer UNMARKED skin..I admire the art, the work and dedication...and if someone has something tasteful, I don't really think twice about it..( or at least just once!!! I promise! lol)

While I was in school, there were kids that had tattoos, from small, tasteful ones to full ink coverage...

and all that ink, just made me skive out...unless you can admire the work up close..it just looks so dirty!! lol

But doing ink is a VERY personal thing!! and ONLY YOU can decide what's best for you. Going on the wrist you can use a cuff bracelette to cover it up, or you can do as someone suggested and get it on your ankle...

But I like DOUG'S idea better...JEWLERY NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE! and you can sell it if it does!! lol

Didn't read all the replies here, but wanted to give you my perspective: If a customer won't order one of your deliciously amazing cakes because you have a small tattoo, is that the clientele you want? Something tells me they would be snooty and hard to please as a customer. You are not talking about barbed wire tattoos all over your face, or one of those god awful blue prison ink tattoos... you are talking about small and classy. And it has no bearing on your baking/decorating ability. (Not that facial tattoos would either, but it might scare potential clients. You'd have to deal with that!) And there is always the option of wearing long sleeves while meeting with customers (I am sure someone has already pointed that out) then roll 'em up or change shirts while baking/decorating. Good luck, and you go get that tat!! It sounds lovely!

I love tattoo's and i wouldn't mind buying a cake from someone who has Tatto's.
But i personally wouldn't put one where it's that visible. I wanted something very similar to what you mentioned. But i stopped myself for that reason, i wasn't sure how people in business world would take it. So i didn't, instead i'm waiting a bit and will get one that will symbolize the same meaning (my kids) but not so visible to everyone.

I have an "ankle bracelet" tattoo with "charms" that signify my children and MOST people never even notice it....even if I'm wearing shorts and sandals. Other than my parents, I've never heard of anyone having an issue with it icon_wink.gif I think a small and tasteful bracelet tattoo is not offensive at all.

Well I gotta say I LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! tattos!!! And I have just recently (earlier this year) gotten one on my right forearm. Well the ONLY person to complain was my mother "You'll never get an office job now! you'll have to wear long sleves every day at work if you do" Well the way I see it is it's a tasteful one and it's pretty. But I haven't had anyone say anything out of the way about it. I've had people complain about my jewlery though lol. I wear 4 rings on my wedding finger... one is my engagment ring with my wedding band wrap, one is a diamond solitare that was my grandmother's and the 4th is a heart shaped band with diamonds on it bought by my husband and daughter for mother's day this year. On my right hand ring finger I wear my birth stone ring my daddy got me on my 16th birthday, as well as my sisters class ring which I've had since her accident two years ago... no one complains about the tats just "too many rings!" LOL

Below is the pic of my newest tat icon_smile.gif I have a total of 6 tats but only this one is visible, I have on that is 3 black and purple roses on my left arm up by my shoulder in memory of my grandmother, and that's only visible in bathing suits which is a no no for me lmao. I also have 2 roses innertwined on my ankle that is visible but so small not many people notice it icon_smile.gif

I have three tattoos and my husband is a tattoo artist. I would have no problem buying from a person who has visible tattoo's. One thing to consider though, when doing names in such a small manner as a charm you do run the risk as you age of having the ink "blend" into your skin a bit and the names of your children not being as easy to read if written in script. I love them and my hubby will not doa ny on the face or neck.
Mine are easy to cover with clothes and I really think the anklet is a better choice but it is YOUR body and YOUR decision!
Best,
Tracy

This has been a very interesting thread to read! I just have to throw in my 2 cents, even though several others have already expressed the same sentiment.

I don't have a tattoo myself. Not because I'm opposed to them though, I just don't have an attention span long enough to tolerate 1 design for the rest of my life. icon_razz.gif

What you're talking about sounds like a very tasteful tattoo. Yes, I have seen some nasty tattoos that would steer me away from doing business with someone. A small bracelet-that would not stop me from doing business at all! In general, I think tattoos are pretty cool!

I have no tats but I have been thinking about getting one for awhile.... and will probably get one in the next five years. I am for sure going to get it some where it can be covered up when I have to go to conservative things. Also I have been told by many many people to get it in a place that it can be covered.... I think when you are running a business you need to look as professional as you can... even if it means covering up that tats. I know you are not getting anything offensive but I know alot of people who don't like tats and are narrow minded like that. With that said... I would get it on your ankle where you can cover it up and less noticeable. Just my opinion though.

editied to add: first impression is everthing-- its sad but its true.

I agree with most I feel that it is a personal choice. I just turned 30 and have seen some really awsome ones. I live in Dallas TX so I see plenty have friends with them etc. That being said they all have them where they can be covered up with clothes. I have seen women with them on the arms wrist and they seem gross. That would not work even here for someone as a buisness owner. Maybe have you thouht the same design on your ankle? That way would not be as obvious. Just my thought though. Good luck.

Ok tossing in my 2 cents plus some. First off I am 43 and have one tat. I got it 20 plus years ago. My love life stunk. I was pretty young and pretty tipsy. And a friend did mine old school with a needle and the ink. Painful ya kind of but I was TIPSY. It is on my breast. It is a heart with a chunk out of it, with my intials in it. I never got it completed though. It was suppose to say LOVE BITES. But not wanting to pain didn't complete it. I don't regret it for a minute. It was apart of my life and looking at it helps me remember what I went through at that time of my life. You can only see it if I were a VERY LOW CUT shirt or swimsuit. When my husband first saw it he said he knew what it meant and would never hurt me. I knew he was a keeper. I does sag alot know LOL icon_lol.gif but it is me.

As for my sister she has her 3 older kids name on her upper arm. She kind of regrets it because she has gained alot of weight and it is distorted. And doesn't look as pretty now. She also has one on the back of her neck and ankle. They still look good. She also has I don't know how many piercing in her ear. I really don't like the way they look. To many and I only like afew in the ears. I have several nieces and nephews with piercings all over there bodies. My own teenage boy has his ears pierced. My 8 yr old DD recently got her ears pierced. But most people look at boys differently than girls when they have piercings.

I agree with some that have posted. If your business is clean and you don't smell and have greasy hair. Than a simple bracelet tat would be fine. I am not against them on your arm either. Just know the outcome if you gain alot of weight. But some people look at them as bad. You get a tat for you and your feeling are what counts. That reminder when you look at it is a great love and appreciation for your children. I hope my input helped you.

P.S. you would sometimes be suprised by the people that have them but don't have them visable. I was suprised when one of my customers showed me hers on her ankle. A very pretty flower on her ankle. Very dainty like she is. And she is a professional business women who in her 40's recently got the tat. She is going to get one on her lower back next.

Sorry this got so long.

Tattoos ARE pretty sexy and more on some people than others, but all said and done there are OTHER Things that as a consumer I would find more objectionable than someone with a tattoo making my cake or cooking my food! lol

Even though I'm not about to run out and get one at this late stage!! lol

I feel the need to add one more thing here....

My brother who is 35 is basically covered in tatts. He has about 30 or so. Ranging from wrist to chest to back to neck to head.... and everywhere in between. He's a very thin slender man and is clean cut and attractive so it doesn't look bad on him. My grandmother even admired one of them before she passed lol.

My mother who just turned 59 is wanting to go out and get one on her upper arm but is scared of the pain lol. I don't think she should get the one she's been kidding about getting but I did tell her she should get something like a small butterfly or something.

My daughter who is 7 wants to get a tatt but I won't let her until she is 18. In the (only) craft store here that I can buy cake products at, the girl on the register has HOT PINK and BLACK streaked hair main color being HOT PINK. She wears a spiked dog collar necklace and has her lip, eyebrow and nose pierced along with her ears multiple times all the way up to the top. To me I'm sorry this sickens me. The facial piercings is what turns me off. Ears is one thing but your lips and eyebrows IMO is just wrong. My husband had his nose pierced, was big in style when he did it lol, he removed it the day we met, and hasn't put it back in since. But not because I asked him or told him to but because he didn't want it anymore. He has his ear pierced 4 times in one ear and wears two ear rings in it... he is a head carpenter and is a supervisor and is currently working on a 10 million dollar house project where the owner's are there almost every day and are real ritzy and snooty but do not have a single problem with his ear ring, tatts, or anything.

Everyone is different in their opinions. I for one don't care as long as you are clean, your hair is clean and your hands are clean and protected while you're touching my food, and that you wear a full coverage apron. You'd be surprised what those people in those ritzy resturaunts that cook the food look like and what kinda body art they have. Hubby used to work in a very expencive high end resturaunt and was/is a darn good cook and never had a single complaint about apprearance from anyone.

But I do have to back track and touch base on something I read after my earlier post... someone(s) said it's dirty, it's nasty, and it's destroying our bodies, that we aren't confident in ourselves and so on.... Well let me just say this, my sister was offered a modeling job when she was pregnant with her last child, she has a tatt on her hip that matches the one on my breast, she isn't one bit unconfident or unhappy with her looks or her body in any way but did want a tatt. I'm self concious about my weight which most women in this world are lol but tatts aren't a way to feel better about myself they are a way to express myself and my creativity. Most of my tatts are original creations with the exception of the one on my arm that I posted pics of, that was hanging on the wall in the shop and he just changed the coloring in it to suit me. I don't think tattoos have ANYTHING to do with weather you are clean or dirty. Someone I know doesn't bathe that often but she doesn't have any tatts... her reason is she's lazy... so because I have a few tatts and I shower daily, makes me dirty? I don't get it... I don't understand how it can be seen as being dirty. Nasty is another thing I don't get... as long as it is a tasteful and respectful tatt it isn't nasty. Now yeah if it's something like a body with a cut off head laying near it and blood everywhere and something goory like that yeah IMO that's nasty but not the person but the actual picture is nasty which I've seen lots of pictures online that are nasty pictures of skeletons and such but that doesn't mean the artist is nasty or dirty just because they have a wild immagination and creativity to draw...

Ok I guess that's it and yes I did take offence on that one post a few pages back because everyone in my family except my mother and children have tatts including my 70 year old father. I think when your opinion is that rude and that sharply stabbed at someone then you should keep it to yourself. Basically because you don't know anyone of these people personally and have no right to call them nasty or dirty or discusting or anything.... Just my 10 cents.

Becky--
I agree with you, I did take offense a few pages back but I'm over that now.

I have 2 tats (one is actually 2 on my lower back and one is on my ankle).

At the age of 40 and after losing alot of weight, I got my belly button prierced. Even showed my MIL, that is very "proper" She liked it.
Got my first tat at 42 of a frog b/c I like frogs and as a reminder to Fully Rely On God. 43, got a dolphin on my lower back in Orange Beach, Alabama after watching dolphins swim by every day. Beautiful creatures! Then last year added a sun and tribal waves to it.

I definitely think it is a personal preference, my DH has 5 now, he got his first one the same time I did. I will say that any tat he does consider getting does have to be "approved" by me. No female tats ("nekked" or otherwise) and I do not want my name on him. Also I don't like spiders, skulls or snakes--even though I have seen many interesting tats with them.

Just the same that we should not judge a person by the color of his/her skin, we shouldn't judge them (or profile them) by body art. After all...it is ART.

I have just finished reading this post from start to finish and decided that I needed to put in my 2 cents. My dad was in the USMC during Vietnam and has one on his upper arm that him and his 2 BF got right before they went overseas. He has not regreted for a single minute that he has it. The thing he drilled into my head over and over is that is you get a tatoo make sure there is meaning behind it. That being said, I have one on my ankle of a cross with a rose wrapped around it. Very taseful, pretty, and I had it done not to long after a very good friend of mine was killed in a bizarre motorcycle accident. I don't regret for an instant that I have it since it is a rememberance to him!

So I say go get that tatoo. I wouldn't think twice about it if I walked into your shop to buy a cake. It sounds like a beautiful tatoo with a great deal of love attached to it!!!

tatoos ,the removable kind, are great or if you put it somewhere that it can be covered if needed.

I don't know about you but I do not wear the same outfit every day and the clothes I wear varies depending on where I am going. No matter how cute a tatoo it stays the same day in and day out. Tatoos go with a certain style. If you are planning on not changing your style or not going anywhere formal or dressy say for the next 50 years then by all means go for it.

Myself, I like tatoos but can't stand pain and now that I am a gramma, glad I didn't get the braclet and anklet tatoos in the 60's. fashion changes, tatoos don't.

I think I would not get a tatoo where it could not be covered because their are people that still associate tatoo with uncleanness. Therefore, you could probably lose business as a result of it being on your wrist. Like many of us have stated, I have two tatoos but they cannot be seen unless I want them to.

I have tattoos and so does my husband.

I do agree, however, that there's one persona you might want to portray at a work/business environment and another that might be better kept private/at home. We both have our tattoos on our backs and upper arms, never ever wearing clothing at work that would reveal them. (Mostly because they are super goofy!! icon_lol.gif )

We also think our parents and their generation might be offended by them, so it's easier and just repectful to keep them to ourselves infront of them. It doesn't lessen our pride of our tattoos or our pleasure at seeing them. They are art....but they don't have to be displayed like a sandwich board. thumbs_up.gif

I am one of the most conservative, proper people, and I work in a corporate setting. And I have a tattoo. I did make sure to get it in a place where it can't be seen, but I LOVE IT. It's on my bikini line, and I smile every time I see it. Just a little purple flower with some greenery. My boyfriend is in love with it, too, and he's not a huge fan of tattoos in general.

I agree with Mac & Becky... mean things are uncalled for especially when it comes to opinions~

I have 2 tattoo's. I'm very conservative. People can't believe I have tattoo's which aggravates me! So people do judge badly! That's so sad. I got my first one about 5 years ago (I'm 39 now). My parents where with me & they each got one too~ I just got my 2nd one in Sept & it's an anklet with none other then a turtle on it! icon_smile.gif If they are tasteful I have no problem with them. thumbs_up.gif

Someone who I would not buy a cake from would be a smoker. If I can smell cigeratte smoke on you there's NO WAY I'd buy a cake from you. I have been in restraunts where I've had somone wait on me that has tattoo's. I'd would rather see a tattoo on my waiter/waitress then smell nasty, musty, cigerate smoke. That is what is considered dirty to me. Not that they are a dirty person but that they stink of cigerates. IMHO that's un-professional. Thank God smoking as been band in all public places in Louisiana effective Jan 2007!!

So if you want to get a tattoo then by all means get one & be like the millions of other folks who have them & are VERY PROUD of them & not ashamed to show them!! thumbs_up.gif Go for it!!!
