Stupidly Sliced Through My Silpat
Decorating By ediecooks Updated 22 Nov 2006 , 1:20am by playingwithsugar

I have heard that as soon as it's cut you can't use it anymore because of the silicone being exposed and possibly getting into the food. Maybe someone else is more of an expert on this and will know for sure. Sorry that happened! I know how expensive those are.

I thought the whole mat was silicone...??>>

Mine has slices in it too. For some reason some people think it is a cutting board but it still works fine.

Thanks. I forget where I stole it from, but you're welcome to copy it any time.

From the Silpat's manufacturer site:
Caution!
* Never use a cut or ripped Silpat® as glass weave could migrate to the food.

You can cut out the parts that are not sliced and use them for little things. We used cut up pieces for sugar work to nuke stuff in the microwave. Mind you there were no slices in the surface of the smaller salvageable pieces, so no glass weave issues.

So don't chew on pieces of the Silpat!
Dang it!! I was going to chew on a piece for thanksgiving.
Mine has the corner sawed off. Where the orange part is & I still use it. I love my silpat. Its right up there with my Kitchen Aide!!

Yeah It probably is calorieless!! I still use mine. There are no freyed pieces just one slice!! If I die from it I will certainly have someone post that it happened!!

Here is a website for silpats.

Synopsis -
You should not use a Silpat with cuts in it for direct contact with food, because of possible fiberglas contamination. It is alright to continue to use it between a dish and a hard surface.
