Picked up 3 bottles of Monin gourmet flavorings at Marshall's (Caramel, vanilla, and raspberry),5.99 for I think 240zs.

That's awesome! I wonder if all Marshall's carry it? i'll have to go check!
Have you used these flavorings before? How much do you typically add to a cake or icing recipe?
No, I have not used the flavorings in any cakes yet,but alot of my friends do. I think I read on this forum about someone using the flavorings in cakes and when I saw them at Marshall's a flashbulb went off and I started grabbing them!!! I know if I had not bought them they would've been gone the next time I went back. Matter of fact, I may go and pick some up for gift baskets for my friends Christmas presents.

There was also a chocolate sugar free Monin flavoring for any of you ladies who bake cakes for diabetics. I would suggest to get them now since the rush will be on for shopping after Thanksgiving. You may not be so lucky.

And for what it's worth, Monin is the ABSOLUTE BEST flavor syrup brand around. It far outclasses DaVinci and Torani syrups--especially the sugar free syrups. I wouldn't use anything else, and $5.99 is a GREAT price. It's usually about twice that at most stores. To Marshalls I go!

modthyrth,
could you tell me how much you use in both cake recipes and icing recipes? Also, do you sub out some of the liquid to add these or do you add the syrups in addition to the liquid already in the recipe?
I picked up a Vanilla one and a Raspberry one today . . . I'm tempted to go back tomorrow and get the caramel and the Hazelnut.
Does anyone know how using these syrups compares to using something like LorAnn's oils?
FINALLY, just wanted to mention that my Marshall's also had a lot of Madagascar Vanilla (a few different brands) for about half price. I got a $20 bottle for $9.99. I did wonder while I was there if this stuff is really old and that's why it's at Marshalls, but none of it goes bad, right? So it shouldn't matter . . .???

I've only used the monin syrups in place of a simple syrup brushed on cakes, actually--not in the batter or buttercream. But I'll bet it would be great! Monin flavors seem to be more intense and concentrated than the other brands, and the sugar free variety is just better all around.
I do use the sugar free/fat free monin syrups when I'm making baked oatmeal or CORE granola (for weight watchers). Also in coffee.

Thanks! Great tips. I would have never thought to brush the syrup straight onto the cakes.
i'll definitely have to go back to Marshall's now to get a fat free bottle!
