I just baked a cake in the 3D duck pan for the first time and it didn't reach the top! It only rose about an inch above the bottom pan. I used one cake mix, 4 egg whites, 1/3 c oil, 1/2 c water, and a pudding mix.

Directions said to use 2 layer cake mix. Afterwards, I read on that I needed 5 1/2 cups of batter - I imagine I actually have to measure it or was it just my recipe?

Need to bake this ASAP

I measured when I did mine and it still didn't seem like 5.5 cups was enough. He had fuller feathers on the one side so he kept leaning. Next time I would add a little bit more. Good luck!

Thanks! I guess I'll just add as much as I can without it spilling over...

When I made this cake, I had to use a little more than one cake mix. One side was fuller than the other. It wasn't that bad, so I just built up the icing a little more on that side to try and make it even. Hope this helps.

I realize now why it is important to cool 5 mins on one side, take the top off, then flip it over. I got busy with my kids and let it cool one one side, hence, one side is now a bit smaller icon_confused.gif

I'm covering with fondant tomorrow, so I'll have to eyeball the crumb coat to make the sides look even (more BC on the smaller side).

Gotta love these learning experiences!!

the key is to fill it up to the rim...like it looks like it will over flow. i recently made my first duck and it came out well. i thought it would be a disaster, but it really wasn't. icon_lol.gif

Diane - I LOVE your cake! The tiles all the way down to the cakeboard add the perfect touch.

Thanks for the help! My batter was thick so I mounded it a little higher than the rim just in case. It came out fine (except the cooling and settling on side part). Now lets see if I can smooth fondant over it...

thanks...it was very time-consuming though. icon_lol.gif
