New "edible" Glitter?

I know I've been away from decorating for some time now but I've just recieved my cake decor mag and in it shows how to make glitter with gelatine!!....you all perhaps know about it already ....but I got quite exited about it cos I have been following some threads that are airing concerns about the commercial glitters.....anyway, it's just made by coloring the gelatine and blitzing it in a food processor...how simple is that!....It looks wonderful in the mag,they've coloured it red and put on Pointsettia's....the tiny "pieces" of gelatine look like sparkling glass. not sure how fine you could get it before it looses its sparkle but I'm sure going to give it a go.

My grandmother (who was a professional cake decorator of note in her day) used to make edible glitter by painting a thin layer of glycerine on a cookie sheet, drying it out in the oven on a low temp, and then scraping it off the sheet. It flakes and is exactly like the edible glitter sold commercially today. I believe she used straight glycerine, but I know I have her handwritten notes somewhere and I'll check.

yes. Keep us posted. I actually ordered edible glitter and does anyone know how to apply it to cookies? with royal icing?? I tried it with corn syrp -- looks clummpy.... Help. anyone?

WOW, this just gets better and better, you really cant beat getting info on how to make your own"stuff" to put on your cakes....I know its more work icon_eek.gif but worth the effort to know exactly what going on them....cant wait to here how your grandmother did it thumbs_up.gif

wish I could help on this, I would like to know that one too cos I want to make some christmas cookies and add a bit of sparkle....wonder if to add mmf on cookies and then let them dry then add sparkle....dont know?...maybe someone could help us on this one icon_smile.gif

I was wondering if you took the green or red sugar sprinkle stuff and grind them up more would you have an edible gliiter? Was thinking of making mmf ribbons for a xmas cake to look like a gift and thought of putting this finer sugar on the mmf any ideas if this would work? Would be cheaper I think than the real glitter

Hi, these are instructions in the magazine: Paint the surface of leaf gelatine with colour of your choice leave to dry overnight,cut the dry gelatine and put into blender (metal blades) then blitz till untill fine enough for your requirements.......

I was going to try it today but I feel a bit under the weather...hope I'm not comming down with something, I've got the NEC craft show to go to on sunday. icon_smile.gif

hmmm I cant find sheet gelatin can I use the regular powdered stuff and mix it with water and put it on a flat suface and let it dry do you think that would work? maybe add the food coloring while mixing it?

ok I just mixed my powered gelatin with water and have it sitting out to dry will see once it dries if I can blend it into fine sugar Also when I was reading the package it said you can mix it with any flavour liquid so thought hmm if making a lemon cake could make lemon glitter lol well will let you know how it all turns out

I posted last week about this.
Cakes By Sam sells the one that really look like real glitter that you would use on Christmas decorations, but it's just edible.. They do not like the one that look like grated plastic or flakes. I like the kind that look like you would put on a Tiarra. Walmart sells one that says "NON TOXIC" and that made me think. I'm not sure if this gelatin one is "mirror" shiny.

I like the "mirror" shiny kind. Just my thoughts. icon_smile.gif

we were wondering if the powdered gelatine would do the same as the leaf gelatine....it was the leaf type used in the magazine and it looks very much like tiny chards of sparkly glass, the photo of the pointsetia leaves were covered in it and caught the light....they looked lovely, but not sure how far you could go with the blitzing before it lost its shimmer an sparkle, I can't wait to get some and start experimenting with it, Darcat has just done some and waiting for hers to dry.....hope it works

I make my glitter with egg white.....spread thinnly on baking paper, let dry and crumble, Whiteshelled eggs makes white glitter, brown shells gold eggs. Colours can also be added!! easy and looks great. thumbs_up.gif

Mix 1 Tablespoon of plain gelatin with 3 Tablespoons water then microwave for 15 seconds, add color and mix slowly (to avoid bubbles) until all gelatin is disolved.
Pour onto parchment or silicon mat and spread as thin as possible. Let it dry completely. I wouldn't use waxed paper, the wax might dull the shine of the gelatin.
Once dry, crumble then use the blender or food processor to make it fine.

icon_cry.gif Well my idea did not work lol I made 1 package of gelatin as per directions and put it in an 8 x 8 pan in the oven on 200 for about 2 hrs
1) 2 hrs is too long came out a little yellowish
2) cant find the little blade for my hand mixer so
couldnt crush it up lol better get those drawers and cupboards
organized.
3) tasted it and texture is not like sugar I think I
need to make it thinnger
4) but it would make a lovely piece of ice on a lake
if someone were doing a winter cake just need to
make it round. It would also make nice jagged
pieces of ice for a winter cake
5) it can be flavoured so thats a plus as well as
made to any colour you want

Oh well I think I'll try sherik's way once I get to the store to buy more gelatin lol

sorry it did'nt work out for you darcat, icon_sad.gif I have just got back from shops and I found leaf gelitin at tesco's so I will paint it tonight and see what happens tomorow, will let you know.

I finally got round to doing it... it turned out ok...but looks better in "real life" than on pics...I think you are limmted on the use of this stuff but could look very pretty in the right circumstanses. Dont think its as good as the bought glitters though...oh well back to drawing board.... icon_confused.gif
